Hi,

My 18 yo sister has been looking at getting a blackberry curve 8520. At the moment, she is with T-Mobile, on a Sim only (1 month rolling) contract, paying £15/month. She gets calls and texts, but no data allowance.

She is looking at purchasing one either online or at a store for about £165 (give or take), but a lot of them come with pre-paid sim cards. Does this mean they arent unlocked to any network? Would she be ok if she got one with T-Mobile (i.e. her current provider) as the pre-paid sim network, or does she need to go online a buy an unlocked one?

She also wants to use BB pin messaging, so i presume all she needs for this is some data allowance, which she should be able to change in her contract with a quick telephone call?

Sorry if this seems either very vague, or very stupid. Neither of us really have an awful lot of knowledge regarding these things, and i know overclockers will tell me straight!

Cheers.
Nathan.

If it's bought via T-Mobile (and hence locked to T-Mobile, usually) then you can use any T-Mobile SIM regardless of whether it was shipped with one or not.

I don't know personally but unlocking should be relatively straightforward if she finds it cheaper elsewhere.

And yes, BB messaging with require data.

You should also try and go through Quidco to get cashback. Also check here - http://www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/blackberry/8520-curve/ - as well as shopping around as you may well be able to get a contract including the phone and data for £15.

If she has a sim-only contract then tell her to call them and ask for the Internet Flexi-booster. It's free and she'll get 500mb per month (used to be 1gb )
