My wallet is now £1190 lighter...

Having used a very similar amount of kit for longish distance walking I think you're looking at the right way to go.:) I used to walk around with a Tokina 12-24, Sigma 24-70 and Canon 300 f/4 and it suited most of my nature/landscape needs, one thing I did miss was a macro function if I didn't take a set of extension tubes.

Got rid of the Sigma in the end and have now ended up with a 35mm prime and a 70-200 f/4 instead of my 300 f/4 (loved it) because it wasn't quite versitile enough.:)

Those and a nice small tripod are a godsend .:p

Aye, I hear what you are saying. I am actually using a 30mm f1.4 at the moment, but I often feel a little restricted using a prime as a walkabout, and my landscape work often needs something between 20-30mm.

I also have a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, but I have mainly used that for events and street photography. Most of the time on the long end I need the most I can get for wildlife. So I think the 300mm f4 + 1.4X TC to give me a 420mm f5.6 is about the best I can get for the weight.

As for the macro side of things, I do have a 60mm 2.8 Macro which fairly small and light, but the 300mm f4 + 1.4X TC is apparently one of the better dragonfly setups you can get. I haven't tried it yet, but will do next year. As you say I could throw a few tubes on there to increase the magnification.

The tripod setup I have covered as I recently bought a Gitzo 1541T, Markins Q3T and RRS clamp. It is soooo much lighter and smaller than my 3540XLS+BH55. It even fits inside the Vertex bag.

Talking about bags, one order I am still waiting for is my new bag; F-Stop Loka in black (http://fstopgear.com/en/loka). It has only just been released (I pre-ordered it, and it is in transit as we speak) but I have big expectations for it. It is a 'proper' rucksack and has been designed for trekking, skiing and extreme sports, and will hopefully be lighter and more balanced than the Lowepro vertex I use now.

:)

Nice to see they are releasing a slightly smaller pack, you're definately going to have to put a review up here when you get it!:p When I can afford it I'm looking to get one of their backpacks, they have a brilliant reputation.:)

It's definately a tossup between size and zoom, and length, I loved my 300 f/4 but it just wasn't quite long enough for a lot of things and a bit too big for a trip or to I went on recently, so I had to get rid of it. No doubt at some point I will be picking one up again and getting a 1.4tc to go with it.:D

Just realised that I can get 10% off the price with cashback. There is a Nikon 10% student cashback going on at the moment. Checked the small writing and it applies to Photography lecturers and technicians as well, woop. So my thread title should actually say "My wallet is now £1071 lighter..." :D

Ah its cool, was just a tongue in cheek comment :p I would be looking to upgrading from my 28 - 105 with an L lens and that could potentially be the lens i go for and it could probably superceed my nifty fifty as well.
