Ok, got my N80 today and well happy with it, but not sure about something.

Basically the 3G icon under the signal bar constantly has those little back and forward arrows under it. Now on my 6680 they only appeared when something was being sent/received and disappeared once it was done. On the N80 it's permenantly there. I have changed the Packet Data Connection setting to "When Needed" instead of "When Available" as I thought it may be that, but it hasn't made a difference. Just concerned that it's keeping the connection open and running up my bill?

Well the arrow icons shouldn't be present unless it is connected to something, they will flash while connecting but stay solid when connected.

If it's not connected to anything then there should be any arrows under the 3G icon

Well only time you will be charged is if you download anything from the net otherwise you wont be charged.

Have you tried a master reset or turned the phone on and off??. Perhaps it says something about it in there or ring up your network and see what they say...could be a faulty unit??.

Did a bit of googling, seems its an Orange firmware issue where it keeps the connection open, not an issue billing wise but will rape the battery. Pressing and holding the red key will give you the option to cut it off and it will stay off I think until you next turn the phone off and back on again.

I have emailed Orange as apparently there is an SMS they can send to stop this happening

If you're not using 3G, you can turn it off to save power. Just go to settings, network, and change the network mode from dual mode to GSM.

Hmmm good ole orange up their silly butchering of the phone, pretty silly imho. Glad you got it sorted out though, if i was you id get it de-branded by flashing to the newer firmware.

What's the latest firmware?

Mine is:

V3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
Rm-92
Nokia N80 (31.01)

How easy is it you flash the firmware yourself or is it best taken into a Nokia service centre?

Having read around it seems we have the latest firmware, I've had no problems either really except the constant data connection issue but thats easily overcome for now

Unfortunately, in this case, google is not your friend, because it's giving you information that's not particularly useful or accurate.

The most common cause of a permanant connection (if packet data is already set to when needed, rather than when available) is the photography software being set to automatically upload, when you don't have an orange photography account. (photography allows you to upload and store pictures taken from your phone in a 200mb photoalbum online for safekeeping).

Go into the options on the photography software, and turn automatic uploading off, and it will (in the vast majority of cases) go away without any further problems.

As for an SMS that can stop it happening.... erm... no, an OMU can't alter the settings needed on the handset, as an OMU only changes sim card permissions which are then read by the phone. Short of turning GPRS off entirely of course...

Ok...that didn't work :)

I have changed the setting so Autostart is off and it still happens when I turn my phone back on. I also disabled the Photography service completely and it still happens...hmmmmm, any ideas?

hmm, must be something else doing it then, that's the usual culprit.

Mind if I ask what sort of battery life you're actually getting, because even keeping the connection open won't drain the battery that much in most cases (and the N80 doesn't have good battery life full stop).

To be fair I have only had the phone a day but its on 1 bar now, I usually charge my phone every night but I'm giving it a few discharge/charge cycles.

I'm just an anal bugger really and don't like it being there, coupled with the billing paranoia which I'm sure is un-necessary.

Would love to have it re-flashed with the standard Nokia firmware but I'm guessing that kills my warranty.
