Sounds like an amstrad CPC-464 to me.

Are you sure it was a console and not a computer? as i honestly cant remember any console that used tapes. When you say tapes do you maybe mean an odd looking cartridge?

Did it have a built in screen or monitor or did you plug it into a tv?

Have a look at this site, im sure its there somewhere.... http://www.thegameconsole.com/

Definitely a Amstrad CPC-464, There was also a Colour monitor version available at a cost. The CPC-464 in terms of power was somewhere between a Spectrum and a C64 but wasn't as popular as either. The C64 was the pinnacle of 8bit computer gaming. FACT!

The CPC was the most powerful 8bit machine around at the time featuring iirc a 4mhz Zilog Z80 CPU. Games like Gryzor showed the CPC's true power, hell that title looked like a 16bit game. It does sound like the green screen 464 but then again the info provided isn't much.

Robert1986, you're prolly referring to Yie Ar Kung Fu or one of the IK+ games lol.

In terms of CPU power the CPC was the fastest, but when it came to games the C64 was the better machine as it had vastly superior video and sound chips. For example out of the C64, Speccy and CPC, the '64 was the only machine to feature hardware sprites and scrolling.

That's discounting the rare later Amstrad plus machines of course, which were actually capable of near 16-bit quality visuals :)

I still have one of the later machines, it came with a cartridge that had to be plugged in to use the basic operating program. Also on the cart was a game called burning rubber, which was also the first game that came with the ill-fated GX4000 which used most of the components from the cpc but not the operating system, it even used the same joypads.

How the hell do you consider one the best of the early home computers to be a 'console'? Surely the 'CPC' part of it's name would have somewhat given the game away.

My brother had an amstrad cpc-6128 - was that the successor of the 464? it had a colour screen (blue backgorund) - games were either on disk or on tape - there were some absolute classics, like head over heels, gryzor and ik+ as mentioned above. Loved ikari warriors too - they were the good old days :)

After reading this thread last night I went down nostalgia lane and began reading all my old Amstrad Action magazines, which I still have. It was sad to see Alan Sugar bring out the Amstrat CPC+ machines with the above mentioned cartridge port - during an era when the 16bit machines (Amiga and Atari ST) were emerging.

I hate to think how much money Amstrad lost because of those poor decisions. I still miss mine heavily. It was a great time to see home developers like the Darling Brothers (who made all the xxx Simulator games) aka Codemasters, and one cannot forget Jeff Minter.

Dad bought me one of them from his wage he earned working down south when the "hurricane" hit, worked for BT so was coining it in.

Also this was a great game.
