If you were to take out a new policy with an insurer, would they take any notice of no claims you've earnt by being a named driver on another policy with the same insurer?

You don't earn any no claims as a named driver unless your with direct line, i don't think anyone else does the same offer they do.

You might be able to argue some but its not a given.

Yeah I know its not a standard thing among insurer's, just thought maybe they'd give me at least 1 year :o

Nope, they have no idea how much you have driven the car so the fact you have not crashed could have nothing to do with your driving skill at all.

To argue the point, even if you're the policy holder how can they say how much you've driven it?

Thats irrelevant,

When getting an insurance quote the price given reflects the risk of insurance over the max millage stated on the policy, since the named driver isn't allowed to drive more miles than the main policy holder the main driver will always do more miles.

Now as said the price quoted reflects the risk to the insurance so regardless of how many miles they do the no claims entitlement is built into the quote.

Being a named driver your getting the insurance at a discount, if you wanted to earn any no claims then a policy under your own name would be more to reflect the risk over a set max millage.

Some insurers will give you an 'introductory discount' equivilent to 1 years NCB if you phone them up and discuss the situation with them. However, it's a means to gain your business, not a right, so it will very much depend on the situation.

Never any harm in asking though :)

Surely if you have a policy such as that one offered by direct line where a named driver owns a no claims bonus, then it serves the exact same purpose as a normal no claims bonus?

Are you actually earning any no claims as a named driver on your policy or are you asking if the experience itself (with no official ncb) will count?

heres an intresting thing about the direct line deal.

it says that named drivers get no claims bonuses, but the no claims bonuses only apply to direct line.

so if you and another named driver are on a car together, the actual holder gets his no claims, the 2nd gets direct line only no claims. so if in a year you change to anyone else the 2nd persons no claims are invalid

Its not quite the same, you can't take your no claims then run off to Tescos Insurance for example, i'm just wondering if you built up 3 years as a named then went with a years named then would you have 4 years to move or not....

He is asking if experiance itself and the fact he aint crashed will earn him any.

Yea its a good way of keeping business but see my post about wonder if that would work?

thats a good question, i dont think it will work. i think that they will find a way around for "business" purposes

No doubt they would just give you 1 years, shame cause my sister will be a named driver under my dad's policy so it would have been handy for her.

I wasnt aware of this, I was hoping to switch to a policy where I could earn no claims as a named driver when my current one expires otherwise when I come to get a policy of my own, im going to struggle.

It's not as bad as it sounds. What happens is that the NCB you build up as a named driver can only be taken as a main driver on a direct line policy initially. But after the first year you'll get a certificate stating you have X years NCB which you can use to move. So worst case scenario you have to have one year with DL as a main driver. Personally I've been with DL the last few years and found them very competative price wise and the cross policy discounts (ie off home insurance and second cars) means it makes sense to stick with them for me at the moment.

Next question then is what do I do next, I was looking to get a Clio 172 to replace my Clio 1.2 Extreme, own policy on existing car with 0 ncb will be £510 or the 172 will be £1100. The 172 premium stays pretty high until I've accumulated 3yrs ncb and I'm 25 then it drops to around £580 (1yr is ~800 and 2yrs is ~900).

Suggestions?

If you can afford it, go for the 172 and take the hit on the insurance. I've been known to pay in excess of £1000 a year insurance at various points during my driving carreer, it does normally come down quite quickly.

Have you got a variety of quotes from various companies on that? Tried adding your mum or dad as an additional driver?

Dad's got a TS10 so that won't help. Mum's only provisional.

Churchill is currently the cheapest I can find, tried Admiral and Bell but theirs is over £1300 with bonus accelerator and over £1500 without, and £350 excess vs £250 at Churchill (I think).

Ahh right im with you. So lets say you build up two years as a named driver, go with them as a policy holder for a year, you will then have 3 years in total when you come away from that year?

Good to know, thanks

That's certainly my understanding of it. Would probably be worth checking absolutely with them just to make sure though :)
