Morning everyone,

Im looking to get a nice NAS device and have been looking at the:

Icy Box IB-NAS4220-B NAS Enclosure

for some time. I think it does what i want it to, just wanted to double-check before i place the order.

Basically i just want it to have 2 available HDD slots and act like a normal "computer" that i can map drives to in my Windows>My computer and my new Mac. From there it will steam media/High-def to my computer and other devices. Will this do the job? (i know i need a HDD for it :) )

Any additional functionality it has will be good to explore but fundermentally i just want it to work as extended storage for my Windows / Mac computers and be secure!

So, should i place the order? ;)

Thanks all

Mornin,

I have a LaCie NAS drive, which I imagine behaves in a similar way. Yes you can set it up so it appears just like a shared folder on a networked computer would, as well as using other protocols. You can password protect the shares to make it secure. I've set up mine so me and my housemates have our own private sections for backing stuff up to. If you've got a nice reliable network connection then you should have no problems.

PK!

not sure about the icy box but I would assume it would work at the very least as a mapped drive but my synology (highly recommend them) has the option to have folders activated specifically for music/video etc which can then work with any supporting player. In vista they show up as a media drive.
