Nearly rear-ended someone -on camera

Yeah, after watching it several times if my eyes are perma-fixed to the car in front and my neck restrained from swivelling left and right then yes it does.

I actually start braking at about 7s in to the clip and then realise that she isn't slowing down but actually she's stopping! It's not as if I looked ahead and anchored on immediately.

I'm still replaying it over in my head to remember where I was looking at what points and I don't think I would really do that much different. My gap I leave between me and the car in front is perfectly fine (though not when I'm kissing her bumper lol)...

If I submitted the video to insurance company and had witness to say that there was no reason for her to stop, or that they saw her on her phone or whatever, would that help?

I thought straight away at the time, this is going to be my fault in the eyes of the insurer and probably some people on the internet (not that I instantly thought I would upload it to YouTube but you know what I mean) but I feel she would be to blame as well which makes me sound like I don't take responsibility for my actions.

So glad I stopped in time though as I want to get rid of the car at the weekend lol

Ultimately the responsibility is always with you to maintain an adequate gap to the car in front to allow you to stop in time. If you can't stop in time, be that because you're too close or just not paying attention to what is directly ahead of you - that is your fault.

How or why the person in front is stopping is irrelevant really.

Yeah, just throwing the question out there.

Perhaps I should have trusted my instinct and booted it. I don't even know why she didn't just stay in that lane anyway!

A little further round is another three lanes, she could have switched then or even on the small dual carriageway further up.

Very good, lol.

I see you're a trucker. There was actually in the same spot there a truck that hit a car in that very spot because he was in the wrong lane (lane on the left of mine). He was a foreigner though (polish plates).

Ahh the green light! Was scratching my head for a few replays :p

Yeah, standard fare for an Audi driver. Amplify x3 if it's a woman.

Your reactions must be very slow...it isn't like the skidded to a halt, saw it coming a mile off...100% your fault if you went in the back end. You can see them slowing down however you kept pressing on, almost looks as if you did it to prove a point to them.

Blowing your horn doesn't help the matter as if they are a nervous driver you just made them 200% worse.

Poor driving your part...

edit - it takes you approx 6 - 7 seconds for you to realize their brake lights are on...6 seconds in the video they press the brakes however you seem to continue to move on...

I know you mention it and give some excuses in the video but you should be aware on the surroundings and be looking far enough ahead to anticipate what is happening.

Hi GinG,

If you re-read what I've said, I am anticipating other drivers cutting me up and the traffic from the left further up driving through their red light.

As far as I was concerned the Audi was in the wrong lane, moved across, the lights changed from red to red, amber which is when I started scanning to my left, half-left for potential hazards, i.e. the example above.

I lifted off the throttle when I saw her brake lights, wrongly assumed she would realise that the lights were green (what was she looking at for 10 seconds - clearly not outside the car, well it was for me as I said she was looking down when I was stationary) then I touched the brakes and then realised she wasn't going anywhere.

Thanks for the feedback none the less.

The A3's brake lights were on a bit long and the vid doesn't really do either of you any favours as a result. The choice of music and the other cars numberplate might just make me side with the A3 driver a little more. :D

We all have a lapse every now and again, even the drving gods in Motors.

Of course there was, however, if I was fixated on the car in front and someone did cut me up from my immediate left or someone jumped the red also on the left then I would get flamed for not anticipating or for looking.

Loose, loose. I am not perfect, and neither is she, or anyone for that matter.

If only there was a video which showed where my eyes were looking so some could better understand.

I can see why his reactions would seem slow - there are a couple of junctions I regularly use where people very very often dive across from a left turn only lane having hovered just off your front wing and so you end up watching cars to your side because of how often people cut you up like that and it's all too easily done to not pay attention to the car in front for a few moments - especially when they shouldn't have cause to do anything out of the ordinary.

this thing happens all the time near me people just stop for no reason i think everyone is trying to claim whiplash, i have only been driving for 7 years but im sure standards are getting worse
