Hi guys, i'm in need of a diesel due to the extended miles i'm doing now. Have about £3.5 - £4k to spend. I have been looking at the Clio 1.5 dCi they seem pretty decent for the money, but the trim levels confuse me? Which is the best one to go for? Obviously i'd like the 100BHP model, but i'd settle for less. I've heard they can be remapped for decent gains? Not too interested in 0-60 times as I'm used to 12+ seconds! Would like something that can zip about town during the week and something I can do 200+ motorway miles every weekend. Any other suggestions? Cheers!

Rob.

How much of that "£3.5-4k" is additional money over the car you've already got?

If you really, really do still think you need a diesel, for that price I'd be looking at a Mk3 Mondeo TDCI, preferably Ghia spec or higher!

Probably about 2.5k is extra money over the car I have. I'm looking to change car regardless really, be it for another petrol or a diesel. I'm only going for diesel at the moment because I can't afford to run the petrol cars I want!

I like the Mondeo suggestions, especially the Mk3, is it possible to get one with the facelift interior in my budget? the 130bhp version.

Cheers

Rob.

Possibly, if you're not too concerned with how many miles it's done (I'd prefer a newer, high miler than a low miler, purely because they're more likely to have sat on the motorway, rather than crawl around town).

Please excuse the interruption DevilsAdvocate.

Not worth its own thread but what's the opinion on this?

Is that about as good as I could get with £5000?

A slow revving, heavy, underpowered, diesel engine that can't produce any power unless its on boost is not going to result in a car thats zippy about town.

If you want something zippy buy a petrol supermini but you're not going to get both with this engine and at this price point.

The dCI 65 and 85 are pretty laughable in terms of being 'zippy' about town. A small tractor slowly building up to speed might be more apt, and you could well struggle to find a reasonable mileage 100bhp dCI within your budget.
