Hi all.

Ok setup i got atm is

p31-ds3l onboard sound using digital optical out port <---> amp Yamaha DSP A595a

<--> 2 bare wire tower speakers (not sure of the name but they sound great.

I looking to get a sound card but i seen one but has no digital optical out so would the not be as good as other ways to connect sound up?

Also any one got a Yamaha DSP A595a what best setting you find with it i got it no added sound effects atm.

Budget id say around 65ish

Thanks

The card you linked does have optical, it's what is known as a flexi jack. Serves as a mic and optical in jack, but the optical cable varies slightly, it has what appears to be a 3.5mm jack connector. Or you can get an adaptor which will fit on the end of a standard optical cable, which will then insert into the X-Fi's digital socket.

However, by using digital (optical or coaxial) you will gain no benefit from a sound card. A sound cards purpose is to convert the digital into analogue, by using digital, the conversion is done by the receiver or amp. As you already have digital connection on your motherboard, a sound card would be rather pointless.

What was your reason for getting a sound card, better sound quality? Gaming features?

Hi, I would just stick with the onboard optical output, getting a soundcard with optical out will offer no increase in sound quality when using a digital connection.

I wanted to have better sounds for games is what i am after.

You say (( optical out will offer no increase in sound quality when using a digital connection.

I am noob when comes to sound setups so what be best connection/cable to use for the best sound using the amp ?

I don't need to use optical out if its not the best i thought it was cause it's digital ?

Thanks

It depends on where the digital connection is, or rather what it is connected to. The audio we hear is analogue, so a sound chip and circuitry has to convert the digital into analogue. With your current system, your receiver will convert digital to analogue far better than your onboard sound chip, so you are right to use digital to connect your receiver.

Buying a separate sound card is fine, but you would need to connect via analogue, so the sound card is used. With a digital connection, it just bypasses most of what a sound card is. For music purposes alone, the sound card would need to be able to convert the digital into analogue better than the receiver, otherwise if it's not going to sound as good, no point bothering.

But as you are going to use it for gaming, it becomes a worthy purchase. You will have to connect with analogue as digital will bypass the sound cards ability to produce positional sound, or gaming effects.

When you say 2 bare wire tower speakers, do you mean you have surround tower speakers that have 2 bare wires? or you have 2 tower speakers that have bare wires?

Thx marsman i am getting better understanding now :D

The speakers i got are ( not sure how good they are)

Liberty 5+

System: 2 way bass reflex
Long term Max power: 100W
Short term Max power: 150W
Frequency range +/- 4 dB: 40-22,000Hz
Sensitivity (2,83V / 1M): 87dB
Impedance: 4-8 Ohm
Tweeter: 25 mm soft dome
Woofer: 165 mm

At the back on the speakers it's got to connection 2 ports for both left and right.

I hope i have set it up right by putting say positive through both screw ports on 1 side then same again for other negative side.

I only use them 2 speakers.

( 1 more question i had in the back of my mind and its about my amp and speakers impedance and what setting should i use based on the picture below from the manual.

My speaker impedance is rated 4-8 Ohm

Thanks sorry for the noob questions.
