I am looking for a new car to keep in my family home in the uk.

The car does not have any specific requirements except that insurance has to be reasonable and No bigger then a 3 series.

Budget is 7k (can push up to 10k I have to)

It will be insured under my mums name (it will be her car) she has full NCB however my brother and I will also be named drivers (+ my dad) the problem is my brother is 20. My dad would like to keep insurance under £1000

So any suggestions?

I was thinking Civic, MX5 (dont know about Insurance), A3

what about this

MX-5 :D

MX5 isn't that bad on insurance, only group 12 on the 1.8. Try a quote and see. Can get ~2001 one for that price.

Mx5 insurance aint really a problem. It's not exactly a family car tho.
I think what he means by a "Family" car is just a car that his whole familly can use.

It doesnt matter if its a 2 seater or a 7 seater, just aslong as it goes and doesnt really need a lot of space because they arnt carting small kids around

In that case I d go for the most fun car I could for the budget and insurance, if you dont need 4 seats, the MX5 should do the business if you get on with the looks, great fun, decent on fuel and insurance, rock solid reliability and not slow, the depreciation is quite slow on them.

Plus the roof comes off!

not a big fan of the breadvans, the type R's are ok, but only because they are nuts! the 1.6 does not deserve the term Vtec IMO.
Not a bad car, but no what I would buy.
What do you want out of the car, how many seats do you need? do you wnat a fun car or a practical one?
The MX5 shouldn't offer any insurance problems, they are easy to insure.

Why doesn't it deserve it? It has VTEC just liek all the rest so it should have it in the name.

Yeah people forget that VTEC is just the name for the type of cam profile black magic that Honda do. It's not just for performance, it can also be used to boost economy.

However people link the name with performance, a bit like 16v back in the day.

group 13 upwards for the 140bhp 1.8 which is the one you want, the 146bhp engine that came in after 2000 could well be a group higher, also sams conran is group 15 / 16!

yea, it is used for economy, but they could have put a bit more power in the "sport" its only 100 horse. you can either have 100 bhp sport or a 200bhp Type-R.
Not think there is a gap in the range? they have chucked out 160bhp 1.6's and 180bhp 1.8's

The type-S was pretty potent at 150ish BHP and sat between the two. Not really up on my Honda's though I must admit. If I was buying one myself though I think it would be the type-s
