Well I'm currently in the process of writing my Golf off (my own damn silly fault), which is a real shame but life goes on and I need to find a motah, or at least decide on what to go for pretty soon-ish :(

I think I'll take this opportunity to get something a little more sensible and economical, but preferably not dull and uninspiring. Herein lies the problem, I want something in a lower insurance group than my Golf (V5 - 2.3l) but with toys and creature comforts. I'm budgeting 5k, and I don't really want anything older than a 2000 plate.

Not necessarily a hatchback, a saloon or coupe would be ok, 2litres-ish, looks nice , not a bat out of hell but won't run out of puff up a sliproad, aircon a must.

I've been looking at Honda Accords on Autotrader, the 2litre Vtec looks nice and a fairly nice example can be found for that kind of money,

any other suggestions ?

Slightly off-topic sorry but I've been meaning to ask you this...

What do you think of the v5 engine? How was is power and mpg wise?

Cheers, not sure what to recommned you though sorry... It's a very broad criteria! :)

More sensible than a Golf? Is that even possible?

Accord VTEC won't be getting you noticeably better economy than a Golf V5 anyway so unless you do in excess of £5k a year why not get another Golf V5, or perhaps a Bora V5?

Hi mate

Personally I LOVED the V5 engine, raspy engine noise, incredibly smooth and fairly torquey for a petrol, and enough grunt to get the job done (170 bhp)
MPG not so good, averaging around 30 mpg. Having sat behind it for 5 years I can honestly say all in all its been an absolute pleasure ;)

hi Fox

Problem is I might not get the value of my Golf back, and with possibly a hike in my premium I think now might well be the time to get something a little less than group 15/

You are... 34. Any increase in your premium will be negligable - I had a claim and my premium didn't increase much on my Group 17 car.

If thats the case that will be good news, I guess I'm a bit rusty on this :o

I guess it might be sensible to see what my Insurance offers me first - cheers Fox

It would be a shame to move away from a car you love if you don't absolutely have to :)

Honestly if I can continue to insure a 530 at 23 after a claim I dont think a Golf V5 @ 34 is going to cause any problems :) You wont even lose all your NCB.

Yep - you've convinced me :D

Had a call from Norwich Union today, they will be writing off the Golf and giving me about 6k to play with.

This got my attention
