Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get a new DSLR, I currently borrow my dads 350D all the time, and I'd like one of my own.

I do a lot of low light band photography, and also just general out and about photography. Most of the time I am shooting with a 50mm 1.8, and I pretty much love this lens.

My budget is around 500, any ideas?

Is it worth looking at refurbs of older cameras or not atall?

Thanks

You think that your dad will happily lend you lenses from time to time?
Might be worth going down the Canon route then?

If not, then it's really just personal preference, I like the Canon interface, some find it odd, others prefer the Nikon, the 500D is a cracking camera with HD video too.

What are you going to be mainly shooting?

Yes, I believe I will be able to borrow then lenses, as he has a few other cameras and doesn't get chance to use them that often.

I do like the Canon interface etc, and i'm used to a lot of it due to the 350D.
Personal prefenece I would say yes I prefer Canon, recently borrowed a Nikon D70 and didn't get on with it - probably my noobieness though!

My brother recently got the 500D and it's very good from what i've seen him use it with etc.
I was looking at the 400D, 450D and 40D/50D on the Canon Official Store on a certain auction site, is this worth looking at do you think?

I will be doing quite a lot of low light photography - thats what I currently do is Band photography at gigs.
However I am keen to get into general use, lots of landscapes etc.
I'd like it to be a camera that performs well in most situations really.

I am also willing to buy Body only.

Hope that helps!

I'd personally go for either the 450D or the 400D, the 40D is older tech and iirc doesn't have as high an ISO range as the newer models.
ISO would help out slightly if in low light conditions.

You can pick up the 500D body only for £526.... :p

i have a nikon d90 and love it i tried a 450d and just felt a bit cheap and not as solid as the nikon

afaik nikon are quite a bit better for low light/high iso photography

Would it be better to pick up a 450D/400D and a lens or so, or pick up the 500D and borrow the 50mm until I can buy my own do you think?

I don't know about you,
But sometimes I feel a bit like kicking myself for going for the 1000D instead of the 500D, £200 more and I could've been shooting some HD video, but it's purely a personal thing.
I think the 450D is obviously the cheaper option, but that means you can afford to splash out on another lens, filters, a bag, it all adds up!

They are both very good cameras, why don't you pop down to your local shop and have a play with a couple of them?

The video does not interest me, and if that's the main difference between the two then I think for me I would rather pick up the 450D and some other bits and be on my way.

I'll do a bit more research, but thanks for all the info!
Great help.

Woah there, please read up on things before giving out incorrect information.

the 40D out performs the 400D and 450D in every single area.

As Fstop says, the 40D is definitely the way forward for you. You'll appreciate the improved Af system and low light performance for your band photography.

Thanks guys.

Know anywhere that I can pick one up that will be reliable and for a good price?

If I could get it for around 400ish I'd be chuffed.

check out TP forums and the official canon outlet on auction site, 40D definately the way to go.

Came from a 450D and the 40D thrashes it in every possible way, ISO 1600 is usuable compared to the 450D's attempt
