what the best way to get a passport as mine has expired? is there a quicker way of getting it or have i enough time with 5 weeks?

You can get a 1 day service.

I went to the one in London Victoria, paid £140 quid, had lunch in the Wetherspoons near it, then strolled round natural history and science museum till it was ready :)

Takes about 4 hours, need to call and make an appointment :)

The IPS say they take 3 weeks to issue a new one (assuming you're renewing an adult passport). So just get down the Post Office and fill out the forms. You can pay extra, a fiver or so iirc, to get them to check it there and then to make sure the application is correct.
The IPS also offer a fast track 1 week service, costs more obviously. You'll need to get down to a passport office, there'll be one in a big city near you.
Finally, they also offer a 1 day service which costs even more. For both of these, you need to book and make an appointment. This is the number - 0300 222 0000.

But, 5 weeks will be plenty for a normal application.

meh id pay the extra do it in a day "just in case" but i live in London so travel and stuff is no big deal.

Go somewhere that does proper passport photos, not an automated booth. Also pay the extra money at the post office for your application to be checked over before it is sent.

I did mine this way a few years ago and had my passport within a week.

The Cashier at the Post Office told me that they tend to move 'pre-checked' applications faster because there is far less chance of mistakes. Either way though, if you mess something up and it has to be referred back to you, you can quite easily miss your deadline.
