Need help deciding on what NAS to buy

Synology.

Owned Netgear/Icybox/Qnap + Synology, hands down Synology is the best performance wise + just feels that bit more polished, even if the Qnap has better build quality.

Well thanks for all the help, just to say, absolutely loving the NAS unit. Really is a breeze to use and the interface is lovely! Picking things up nice and quick with it. :)

Quick question, I chose just the default "Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)". Will that give me redundancy to the second HDD? Just want to double check, as I didn't click in to do a custom volume setup.

Thanks!

Yes Synology's are nice.

I have an old DS106e with a WD 500GB Green drive which had given sterling service over a number of years.

Just this morning a nice shiny new DS411Slim has turned up (thanks to Overclockers) and is currently creating a hybrid raid on 2 x 1TB WD 2.5" drives.

Looking forward to playing with iSCSI with ESXi 4 and the iPad app to remotely manage downloads.

Incidentally, has anyone used the Wordpress application on DSM3.0?

Synology Hybrid RAID is only normally used when RAIDing disks with different capacities. Just do custom and then select RAID1 for redundancy (assuming 2 disks).

Oh right, well saying as I've now it now, will I still have redundancy yeah? That's all I'm worried about. I've copied data across now so I'd hate to have to start again... :o

When you select SHR does it give you an option to pick which RAID type you want? If RAID1 is there then you should use that.

No mate, just does it automatically. Apparently it's the option to choose if you don't want to fiddle around more in-depth. :D

Synology said:
The SHR is designed to meet the needs for those users who do not care or do not want to know what are the finer aspects of the various RAID-levels which are currently supported on the DiskStation, and would like to use the SHR to handle RAID management, storage expansion and maximize storage capability. The SHR allows for 1-disk worth of redundancy - meaning that the SHR volume can suffer the lost of one disk, and the data volume will still be available for use.

Just got to sort out a niggling problem, when I turn my PC on, Windows does not re-connect the mapped drives. But, I'll take a look at that later. ;)

Thanks all.

I have the same issue, not sure if there's a fix.

When you mapped the drive did you tick the box saying 'reconnect at login'?

You need to make sure that the box where it says reconnect at login is ticked...i had the same issue with my Synology NAS box ie when i restarted or logged off my laptop, i found it wouldnt automatically reconnect to my NAS box...made sure i ticked the box and now it works perfectly fine ie my laptop still connects automatically to my NAS box after restarting or logging on or off my laptop.

Thanks for the help. :)

Yeah unfortunately, that box is ticked. I tried it through the usual Windows "map a drive" mode and then through the Synology Assistant, each time making sure "reconnect at logon" and "remember credentials" were ticked.

Just turned on now, same thing, all red crosses through the drives... grr!

This is Windows 7 64bit. :(

If you click on the drive with red cross does it not then spin up the device and let you browse files?

Sometimes I see red cross but when I click drive it is fine.

No mate, it pops up asking for my credentials again.

BUT! Think I have just resolved this after a quick google, looks like a few people are having this issue.

Turns out if you go to Control Panel > Credential Manager. Then, I deleted out my current entries for the NAS box (they had the IP address as their title so were easy to find). I then clicked "Add a Windows Credential" (blue text) and entered the details again. (IP - Username - Password).

However, I read that if the NAS box is not on a Domain (which mine is not) then you need to put the IP in front of your username also, so I entered <IP>\<USERNAME>.

I then logged out of the PC and back in, and voila! Now connecting fine.
