Some question if you guys wouldn't mind;

Whats the difference between all the numbers and which are better (ie 720 1080)?

What connection does HD use?

Is HDMI just DVI with sound?

In an ideal world whats the minimum contrast ratio be?

Do you get dead pixels like on pc LCDs?

1080 is higher resolution, and native rez of HD-DVD. So as you move up screensize, you should get a higher rez panel.
You can use DVI-DVI, DVI-HDMI, or HDMI-HDMI.
Yes, but HDMI carries HDCP (copy protection, like macrovision)
Ignore contrast ratio, there's more to a decent picture than that.
Yes

DVI can have HDCP too

The difference in numbers is just the resolution 1280x720 or 1920x1080 for the difference between i and p read up on progressive scan - too long to go into.

Ignore squiffys comment on contrast ratio (The more I read by this guy the more I know where he speaks from ;))

the minimum recommended ratio is 800:1 (the higher the better). Another minimum requirement is 8ms responce time (the lower the better).

Dead pixels can occur.

HDMI is set to become the modern scart cable for HD resolutions.

What? You don't pay too much attention to contrast ratio, as Plasma and LCD use different testing methods, also contrast ratio doesn't say just how black a LCD is (they should add black level specs btw) Different companies use different contrast ratios, ie grey to grey?

Really, I thought 1080p wasn't officially part of the HD standard yet. has that changed?

For broadcast no. 1080i is so you still need the higher res panel ideally. Im sure within a few years they will broadcast 1080p

Pretty sure 730p isn't native rez of HD-DVD, and 1080 will be chosen, the reason why I'm holding off a new screen. You don't want to buy HD-DVD titles, then downscale to the 730p screen.

HD will be backwards compatible of course, just that if you want to buy any new titles, and it was mastered in HD, then should have capable display. Not too sure if I would buy new films anyway, and I wouldn't sell off my DVD titles just to get the HD-DVD versions.

"1920x1080 50/60 HDTV"

The HD DVD format supports a wide variety of resolutions, from low-resolution CIF and SDTV up to HDTV formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p.[6] All movie titles released so far have had the feature encoded in 1080p (although the only player currently available that supports 1080p is the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive), with supplements in 480i or 480p. Most titles are encoded with VC-1.
