Need Help, Mis-sold Laptop

Guys hopefully someone can help me with this issue I'm having with a competitor which I doubt I can post the name of here.

I bought a laptop back in December from a very large official re-seller of Acer, this past week the charger broke down and I called Acer support to see what can be done. I was told on the phone that the laptop was registered to a different name and had in fact been purchased in September and repaired on 2 occasions before being returned......

Called the re-seller and was told send it back and we will replace, which in theory is great but I have over 180GB of data on this including music bought on Itunes, second option they said was to give me a £20 credit because it was second hand and I keep the laptop (this is stupid as if the actual laptop goes faulty then I'm stuck with no warranty)

The customer service has been awful and I'm seriously p******, do any of you guys know of anything that can be done from my end or have I been shafted and have to deal with it.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Ether back up your software, music etc and send it back. Or ask to speak to a manager and tell them you'll report them to trading standards for selling reconditions products as new (which is totally illegal), if you can't find a solution that is acceptable to both parties.

Ether way you should have a way of transferring you're files from one device to another without to many problems.

Sold as a new product, they dont even offer refurb products, second problem is the charger is as explained dead now and the laptop is completely drained so that shoots the backup idea out the window...

I'm sure I could backup the hard disk but lets say i wasnt a technical person then what??

The advice is much appreciated,

Thanks

Did you buy this as new? Was it not noticable?

Either way, get an external disk drive to back up to, they arn't expensive and you should have one ideally as a matter of course.

Not much you can do really, although you're in the right, just get it sorted as quickly as you can with as little hassle and it will be much less stressful.

Worth writing an offical complaint to them with a copy to your local trading standards office though as I hate places that do this sort of thing.

I'd back up all your stuff safely then return for a refund or complete exchange. That link above should detail what you are entitled to. Write to them and cc it to trading standards and credit card company too (see below).

Alternatively, if bought with a credit card, let them know and they can and should refund you the amount upon filing a dispute.

To backup your hard drive, buy an external ide/sata 2.5" ubb caddy; remove the hard drive from the laptop; put HD in caddy; connect whole thing to another pc; copy and paste; put HD (with deleted contents) back in laptop. Caddies sold by OCUK and others and are around £20-30.

If only the charger is faulty, is it not possible for a new one to be sent out, or even you to buy one so you can at the very least transfer your data off it?

Again thanks for the advice guys,

I wish I could link to the site you would see what I mean they are a massive online retailer of laptops and also an official re-seller of Acer.

To be honest if they had been nice or tried to be helpful I would have been more open to sorting it with the least of hassle but every call I have made has been nothing but nonsense and they just dont want to help so I would rather push it as far as I can.

Thanks again,

Acers don't have the best of reputations, and their support leaves a lot to be desired from what i've heard too. As for the site in question, if its the fairly large one I'm thinking of too then yes they're customer service is pants. I got a useless response to a fairly minor complaint, so I gave up. I despair to think what they are like with this...

PK!

I *think* you can plug 2.5" hdd's into a PC (certainly if its IDE ... Should be the same for SATA), just set it as a slave drive, copy all data that way :D

The technical side of backing up is not a problem, and to be honest after speaking to Trading Standards just now it seems that I will have to take this on the chin as all I can get is a brand new replacement which means I will have to do a backup anyway...

it's a different size IDE, hence 2.5" and 3.5", however, you can purchase a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE cable so you can plug it into your pc, it will be easier if it is SATA though.

Replacement is better than nothing. Let the retailer know you spoke to TS. Personally, if things go wrong even in the first year, I deal with the manufacturer directly to gget it resolved.

To be honest id just take the hard drive out and get the data off it either by usng a caddy or a cable on another pc and then demand a full refund as you were missold the goods. Goto trading standards if you get nowhere... selling second hand as new is very VERY naughty and makes you wonder what else they get upto.

When you contact the company ask for the sales manager to ring you to expain why the company is selling second hand items as new... if not you will be going to TS immediately. Dont talk to CS chimps and dont back down... scum companies like this get away with it because they can. I should know i used to work in one!
