I'm looking to make myself a new PC and have around £650 to spend, i haven't really upgraded my old machine for around 3 years so I'm a bit out of touch with the new CPU's etc, I'd really just like something thats more up to date.

I've put this together and wanted to ask advice first before i buy:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM (£117.49)
Asus M2R32-MVP Crossfire (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£64.71)
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) (£61.09)
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (£99.86)
Western Digital Caviar RE 250GB 2500YS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM x 2 (93.98)
Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (£29.36)
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) (£7.04)
Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case - EarthWatts 500W PSU (£74.01)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - (£70.49)

Total £630 (inc P&P)

Currently use 2 19" wide screens.

I'd like the machine for gaming and i also do a lot of photoshop work.

Just like to know how well the above will perform with current games or if i have made any obvious mistakes :p

Forget about AMD, it's best to go with the C2D CPU's these days. I'm putting together a spec for you now.

That just about sums it up dosent it. :(

If hes not overclocking the system, AMD is fine.

You people are obsessed with Intel.

Well, the Core 2s are cooler and quicker for the same, if not better price? The retail Core 2 6550 is the same price as the OEM 6000+ and is quicker, cooler etc.

Indeed, when some lower nm processors come out from AMD I will consider buying from there again. Not until then.

Only if i need to do it, but in general not really.

Would i have to overclock to get the same performance as the AMD?

Sorry i'm not that clued up on the Intel Core 2s, the only reason i went with AMD & ATI in my spec is because i've always used them in the past.

Thanks for the spec Alex UK, I'll have more of a read around later.

Yeah you guys are right. :D

If Intel and AMD are the same speeds and are around the same price, go for intel, newer architectect, runs cooler, great chips all around. ;)
