Hi all,

Been speaking to a lady who owns this car http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220522621390&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT the problem is she doesn’t have all the service history of the car although it has recently just passed an MOT check. I’m waiting to get the VIN number to do a check to see it’s all clean.

I’m a noob when it comes to cars as this is my first so any help would be welcomed as I plan to get the car today.

Cheers!

Edit:

I was bidding on this car http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260518010409&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and was offered it but someone told me it's not a good car so help on this would be brilliant also.

No service history no deal, its not a rare car and it is completely unnaceptable to lose the SH and expect anything like proper money for a car like that. The onkly saving grace is if you can track the SH through the dealer network, but its unlikely that it would have full fiat history anyway.

Wow thanks for the quick replies and much appreciated.

fonzee - I have a limited budget and puntos seem to fit the bill, wanted a polo/golf but for a decent one too pricey.

I’m guessing the yellow one is a pos?

Yeah I'd stay away from the Yellow one as well. Looks like a bit of a shed.

Puntos are cheap for a reason.

Yup, the badge on the front.

Everytime I go there they are out of my price range so I though ebay would be best.

Ah I can't win I thought it was a steal :(

I owned a Mk2 Punto as a first car and it was perfectly fine as a town car.

Ignore anything without a FSH. You want to stick to the 1.2 8v engine (Sporting is 16v), the other engines are okay but the 1.2 8v is very robust and should throw up the least problems.

Stay away from anything slightly barry-ed up. Such as K&N filter, 6*9's, crap alloys etc...

Should be able to pick up a 2000-2002 MK2a with average mileage (60k-80k) in reasonably good condition for £1000-£1200.

It's CAT C and doesn't look like a very good deal tbh.

Main thing to check on them is for HGF (mayo) and that the cambelt has been changed roughly every 40k or 4 years. Don't take anyones word for it so you should expect to see the paperwork for it.

I expect they are fine but they need heaps and heaps of work just to make sure they work. A small bit of research confirms this.

What is your budget and how old are you?

800-900, I'm 23 and commute to high wycombe 3 days a week from milton keynes.

I appreciate all the advice given as I only know about computers and such. My dad suggests a ford as everyone knows how to fix them but I can never find any decent ones.

Any other info feel free to ask.

edit:

Currently driving a ford escort 1.8 16v, but I'm only borrowing it and need a car for myself.

I was in the same position and I bought a MK4 Fiesta for £900. Get the 1.25 engine, get one that's been looked after properly (it doesn't really take much to look after them) and you'll have 1000's of miles of happy motoring :)

I also owned a MK6 Escort for 14 months and it was a perfectly good cheap, reliable car.

This. :)

Or they're relatively poor cars compared to the competition?

They might not be as good as a Polo or something but they are no worse than any other generic £1k hatch of the era.

My family owned one from new till it was 9 years old and had done 68k, apart from a service once a year it didn't need anything done to it.

In the 2 years that I personally owned the car it did 50MPG as a ragged it, didn't need one bit of work done to it and passed both MOTs. Insurance was £600 for a 17 year old and dirt cheap to tax. Sold it for £1250 a year ago on a W plate, FSH and 68k on the clock.

Looks a lot better inside than a MK4 Fiesta and should cost pretty much the same to run as long as it has a FSH.
