Basically my Dad would like a history book (for Christmas) that covers the end of the Roman empire in Britain up to the year 1066. I've had a look on that jungle river website but nothing seems to particularly stand out. Does anyone have any recommendations by any chance? Preferably one written for the layman, he's definitely not an idiot and reads a lot of history books, but a university text for instance would be inappropriate.

Any recommendations or advice welcome.

Thanks :)

John o' Farrell "An Utterly Impartial History of Britain" is a good read aswell, if you want something lighter to go with In Search of the Dark Ages.
