Hi guys about 7 months ago I bought a 2005 Renault Megane 1.6 petrol from a local dealer, this is my first car since passing my test. Since the beginning I've had a problem with the car, from a cold start the car will simply not start. The engine will rattle and nothing happens, this normally occurs on two/three occasions before the car will start.

I made the dealer aware of this and each time they tell me they can't find a problem with the car, I left the car in their posession for 7 days to be told the exact same thing. This issue happens sporadically so I could understand if they weren't able to identify the problem.

Fast forward to about a month ago, the car is now stalling at low revs following a cold start, for example approaching the junction at the end of my residence or the traffic lights that follow. The car simply cuts out and the lights come on in the interior, and I have to go through the whole process of putting the car back into neutral, pushing the break/clutch pedals and starting the car.

I contacted the dealer again and theysaid they were too busy coming up to christmas and that I should bring it in after Christmas, I got totally fed up so I brought the car to a local independant garage. Now the first thing he told me was that the car needed servicing, I checked the service log and the only thing the dealer changed was the air filter.

The garage I took my car to changed the oil, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter (Genuine Renault parts). He said the oil that was in my car was like chocolate, and it looked reall really sticky and gunky. In regards to the starting and stalling issues he advised me to wait until I had the car serviced to see how it performed.

Anyway suffice to say the issues are still occuring and having conducted some research the noises I've been hearing during the cold start could be linked to the dephaser pulley. I've spoken to the dealer last week and told him that I'm quite frankly sick of these problems and due to the stalling etc I'm late for work some days.

So today after work I'm taking the car back to the dealer, he's giving me a courtesy car which he never did before whilst they try and identify the issue once again. The car came with 6 months warranty however they did say during that period that they would stand over this starting issue should it worsen as their diagnostics equipment did not show any faults etc.

I know these issues are occuring and the garage that I took the car to seen the start up issue first hand, if the dealer comes back to me and says there's nothing wrong with this car etc, is there anything I can do? from a legal stand point or anything, as I mentioned before this is my first car, I guess I was slightly naive in my purchase choice but I'm absolutely fed up and have no idea what to do next.

I'm sorry for the long post but none of my friends/family are anyway car people, any and all help will be very much appreciated as I have no where else to turn to.

Thanks very much

David
