I haven't overclocked a core 2 quad before so some of the mobo features in the bios are a bit different to my i7 system, which im used to. Any ideas what sort of settings/volts i need to be using for say a 3.4GHz overclock roughly? So then i can start tweaking them. By the way the q9550 is an E0 stepping.

So far i've worked it out to:

Multi: 8.5
FSB: 400mhz
DRAM frequency: 800mhz (Memory: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DHX 1600MHz)
DRAM timings: 9,9,9,24
PCIe freq:100

cpu vcore:about 1.25v
cpu GTL & PLL voltage: im unsure wheres best to start setting these to
nb voltage: what do you recommend here? I would have thought stock, but im not sure what that is.
Load line calibration: probably disable for starters
DRAM voltage: 1.80v
CPU & PCIe spread spectrums: disabled
Power saving features i'll disable and re-enable afterwards

You should be able to get that speed on stock volts. If ur not sure what stock is then use auto. Seems like you already got it all figured out

Sort of, based on my very limited knowledge aha. Need help with GTL and PLL voltages for a 45nm quad though. I'd leave them on auto, but if i'm raising the fsb its probably going to overvolt them.

I've read that Asus boards do have a habit of overvolting a bit & better to not leave things at Auto BUT....

Am running a Q9650 @4.05 on a P5Q-E ( looks in the bios, at least, very similar to your board except yours is , of course, DDR3) on following settings :-

FSB: 445
Dram: 534 (1068) - DDR2 (Basically the best speed my ram is stable at using the drop down table that appears in the bios when you clock the fsb - to start with I set it at the nearest , but below, to rams rated speed and adjusted later.)
Dram timings I left at Auto to begin with on assumption that Auto would set a bit slower than qouted (which it did). Then set to qouted timings.
Ram voltage : Set to what the ram is supposed to need per manufacturer. ( it appears that although Asus may like to overvolt - ram they tend to undervolt!)
CPU Voltage : To start with I left this on Auto but once all appeared in order in other areas (i.e. ram settings) looked to find the lowest voltage that it would run at the speed I wanted. ( A good starting point is imo to try with chips vid first and adjust up or down from there) .The q9550 i had before ran 3.4 with volts slightly under the chips vid whereas the current cpu gets 0.05v additional 0.05v.

All other settings I left to Auto and has been stable for a good few months . Would mention that my understanding of GTL & PLL voltages is non-existent , although there is a thread which goes into this in some detail in , I think, the cpu section.Link below

Hope the above helps.:)

Nice one thanks, i'll have a good read of it :)
