Need upgrade advice - BFG GeForce 7800 GTX

Hello Mofodave,

Welcome to OcUK forums!

Please read the forum rules and enjoy your stay! :)

  • It's been a loooong time since I treated myself to a new vid card
  • think my BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC has had it's day :)
  • I'm well out of touch on the graphics card side of things
  • finding it hard to know where to start
  • I would appreciate some advice
  • WoW, CoD, GTA etc
  • I like my games to look as pretty as possible when playing!!
  • Budget wise, I want to spend as little as poss
  • not to go above £175.00
  • Operating System?
  • monitor/screen resolution?

Lots of options for you to choose from that will be a great improvement on your older 7800GTX, you didn't mention what operating system you use or indeed what monitor/screen resolution you game at? . . .

I would suggest you follow the "where to start" link above which will take you too a ton of data on the latest cards so you can make your own mind up about which product works best for you . . . nobody here is anymore an expert than you are but perhaps they just took a little time out to read some reviews . . .

The problem with making a purchasing decision based soley on other peoples "opinions" is although they may be well meaning they will still likely have a subjective bias which means the "Facts" you need are often a little distorted! :D

I would deffo read at least two or three reviews and check the facts if spending that large sum of money ££ . . . if there is anything you need to know after checking the "facts" then feel free to come back and ask for assistance!

[Off Topic]

Hello lads! ;)

Don't want to cause anymore unneeded grief but there is a lot wrong with some of the replies here, this is firstly and foremostly meant to be a polite technical forums but it seems from time to time we all have our bad days and perhaps post things we shouldn't have! :p

Everytime you post on these forums you are representing OcUK forums to the world so its "important" to make a good impression and keep it as polite and friendly as possible! . . . I know there are some people that make posts that go against this but its only a matter of time before everyone gets with the program and helps make OcUK forums the best in the world!

Poor Mofodave, new member just joined up and in his first thread its kicking off! :o

Ezyryder made a technical statement that would seem to be incorrect but how easy would it have been to "Politely" point this out and avoid unnecessary conflicts and bad feeling! :(

Hopefully I said this in the right way to get the point across without angering anyone further . . . we are all meant to be playing on the same team so lets just remember that and find a better way to "communicate"

  • REAPERUK: GTX 470 Would serve you well and a nice upgrade over the 7800 :) best card at that price at the moment #2
  • Ezyryder: the only disadvantage of the 470 IMO is that over the course of its life in your computer (2 to 3 years )you will spend probably £40 or £50 more a year (depending on usage) #25
  • REAPERUK: £50 a year on power, and fan noise, Don't make me laugh lol, utter none user **** #26
  • Ezyryder: Do you need to answer like if you were a 4 year old boy? #28
  • Razor Time: LMFAO.... What a load of rubbish. Care to back up your £40-50 more per year claim with calculations or are you just pulling numbers out of your ****? #29
  • Ezyryder: no need for childish replies though. #30
  • Razor Time: Childish replies are deserved on childish mis-informed posts. #32
  • Razor Time: Either way your 2nd post only confirms I was correct and that your post was rubbish and you did indeed pull the figure out of your ****#36

Example of polite response:

the only disadvantage of the 470 IMO is that over the course of its life in your computer (2 to 3 years )you will spend probably £40 or £50 more a year (depending on usage) for a couple more frames a second.
Hello Ezyryder!

£40/£50 extra a year on running costs doesn't sound feasible  . . . I suppose you would really need to know how many hours the person was running the card for? . . how many hours were idle and how many were full load? . . . and of course how much they were paying per kWh unit? . . . I'm sure the HD 6870 would be cheaper to run but not that much surely! ;)

And then the thread continues on a completely different tangent . . . without insults and without tarnishing the forums reputation . . .
