Lots of options for you to choose from that will be a great improvement on your older 7800GTX, you didn't mention what operating system you use or indeed what monitor/screen resolution you game at? . . .
I would suggest you follow the "where to start" link above which will take you too a ton of data on the latest cards so you can make your own mind up about which product works best for you . . . nobody here is anymore an expert than you are but perhaps they just took a little time out to read some reviews . . .
The problem with making a purchasing decision based soley on other peoples "opinions" is although they may be well meaning they will still likely have a subjective bias which means the "Facts" you need are often a little distorted!
I would deffo read at least two or three reviews and check the facts if spending that large sum of money ££ . . . if there is anything you need to know after checking the "facts" then feel free to come back and ask for assistance!

- It's been a loooong time since I treated myself to a new vid card
- think my BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC has had it's day
- I'm well out of touch on the graphics card side of things
- finding it hard to know where to start
- I would appreciate some advice

. . . I suppose you would really need to know how many hours the person was running the card for? . . how many hours were idle and how many were full load? . . . and of course how much they were paying per kWh unit? . . . I'm sure the HD 6870 would be cheaper to run but not that much surely!
