Negotiating salary

Hi, guys. Has anyone here negotiated a higher salary for a job that they've been offered?

I have been offered a job with company X. The job looks great and I'm pretty much decided to take it regardless. However, the job is in London and as such my cost of living is going to increase substantially. They do pay a London weighting, but this doesn't offset the entire increase in costs (offsets the train costs  , not housing!).

So, I was thinking of asking for more. However, I don't want to jeopodise the original job offer as I really want the job. Has anyone been in this situation? Should I ask for more salary? Should I do it on the phone explaining cost of living as a reason, or how I think that I'll bring experience to the position? Or should this be done via letter? Would they ever withdraw the job offer just for asking? Or should I just accept it and hope that I can increase it later via annual appraisals?

Thanks!

Depends, if you literally can't afford to live on the offered salary then you might as well try and negotiate from the off. Otherwise I would just wait a while.

Never accept and hope it goes up at appraisal and never accept their word it will. It wont.

Now is your time to ask for more money. Simply explain your situation and ask if they will increase.

Make it out to be important, if they feel you're asking just to try it on they will just say no and watch you accept the job anyway. Make it seem as if their answer will depend on if you take the job.

Call them.

I don't get this....? Don't they normally pay all London weighting?
