Netgear ADSL routers

Looking to replace my old Belkin device for something better. I read some good things about the Netgear DG834 series on here but when I was doing a price comparison on another site (No competitor talk please!) the reviews there seemed pretty bad - especially for the top model (DG834N). I'm quite sure that all modern units will work with Vista 64 so my main concern is the built-in wireless card on my wife's laptop (Dell running XP Home). Any comments or recommends?

I have owned a DG834Gv2 which I have recently replaced with a DG834N as I've moved to ADSL2 on Be*. The DG834Gv2 that I have never put a foot wrong both stable and reliable, best of all it was really easy to configure.

I have since given the DG834Gv2 to my parents and it's still going strong.

I'm now using the DG834N on my own broadband and it's exactly the same as the my old router stable and reliable, best of all though is that I get a better ADSL sync speed with Be* using the netgear rather than using Be's provided router :D !

As long as the routers wireless access is properly configured you shouldn't have any bother with your wife’s laptop. It doesn't really matter what OS your using on your PC as all the router configuration is done via the web interface by going to http://192.168.0.1

Hope this helps you!....Oh and Welcome to the forums :)

Many thanks for info .... and the welcome. Has anyone else experienced any problems with this unit or could the negative comments on the other website I (almost) mentioned be down to lack of computing know how?

I thought the DG834GT that Sky gave me was crap at first as it would struggle under torrent usage and mass connections but after Sky regraded our phone line (I emailed them complaining of stability and performance) it has not had a single problem since and not a single reboot has been needed!

I also bought a Linksys WAG200G and whilst it was fine it was too limited in features that I require like IP reservations and more in-depth status screens and so on so had to sell it on.

I've also downloaded almost 30GB of torrent data since then and it's still as fast as I'd expect it from a non upgraded exchange :D

Having looked at the reviews on the site you almost mentioned in your OP, I'm quite surprised at the comments tbh! I have good network coverage via wireless, my network is encrypted via a very long WPA2 key and MAC address filtering and I have noticed no slow down at all, granted this is at 54g speeds.

I'm running their latest firmware for the router that features some very minor bug fixes and all is well. I'd be inclined to say that people on that site that have reviewed it are slightly impatient and when they run into an issue they just dismiss the product completely rather than attempting to troubleshoot it. Granted every so often there may be the odd DOA unit to.

got a free DG834G v3 when changed ISP, was fine when i had 1meg but it is pants on maxdsl, needs rebooting 2 to 3 times a day.

Very easy on configure but replaced it with a thomson speedtouch 546 and its been fine since saturday (not long but better than the netgear)

The v2 onwards 834G is a great bit of kit for a home user. I took great pleasure in attempting to break the first few we had at work for testing and i've got to say they gave as good as they got, torrents etc were not a problem, crap line stat's were handled well. In the end I gave up and admitted they weren't that bad.

got the DG834N here and it is totally spot on. Easy to setup and the N protocol wifi works great on my mac laptop. If you want to go for a futureproof solution i'd recommend this router.

I've been running a DG834 for a few years now, been running 24/7 and it has never let me down. Highly recommended.

Dito. Mine has also been hammered for 4 years by 8 students with torrents left right and centre. We do 200 gig > a month. Holds dslmax at 8 meg perfect. I just bought a new high gain antenna for it to get better coverage (3 story old house with thick walls) and now its great.

Same for me as well. Both of my DG834V2's have been pretty hammered and have performed well. I upgraded the firmware on both of them on recommendation when I got them but other than that I haven't really had to change much. Recommended.

Only thing it won't do is QoS if that is on your priority list.

Thanks for all of your responses. I've narrowed it down to Netgear's DG834N or DG834PN..........unless anyone can suggest otherwise.

using the DG834GT from sky and at first it has been flawless. Now every so often i will disconnects from online gaming. What will happen is it will chuck me out of the server game menu so i will window out and browse for a bit and then i will get the message box saying i am now connected. Even though during all this time the wireless signal has remained green and connected. Dont think its the wireless as im right next to the router and havent changed anything.

Hopefully once sky move me onto their adsl+ system and their exchange (apparently) (still on bt connect atm from their exchange) it will resolve this.

go for the N model - i spotted it for only £10 more than the PN so its worth spending more for a futureproof product - everything about this router is good so far. Just buy it! I got it for around 90quid. Have a look around - it might be cheaper now.
