Hi all,

My sister want to share my broadband connection, I currently have 1Mbps Broadband with Nildram, both machines are Desktop Windows XP & have USB 2.0, thinking of wireless...

What difference does 108Mbps make over 54Mbps? as there is only pence difference in price between the two routers below...

Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch

&

Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch

Finally, if I go for the 108Mbps Router, would it be better to get a

Netgear WG511T 108 Mbps Wireless PC Card

Or

Netgear WG111T 108Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter

For both PC's?

Thanks

Phil

I'd avoid the DG834GT, it uses different hardware to the DG834 and DG834G and it is flaky at best. Have a search on these forums and you'll find several people complaining about them.

I'd go for the DG834G. Even with a 108Mbit router, you'll get nowhere near 108Mbit throughput.

That said, 802.11g isn't going to give 54Mbit, you're going to get 35Mbit/sec max.

D834G now has 2 years manufacturer's warranty, i've got one running for nearly a year now, keep the firmware upgraded and it will run *flawless*

Does 54Mbps & 108Mbps relate to the dowload speed, if I'm downloading will I be slowed down much if my sister is on the internet at the same time?

I'll go with the DG834G then what about the wireless card or USB 2.0 Adapter, which would be best?

Thanks

Phil

54Mbit and 108Mbit relate to the theoretical maximum thruput on the wireless interface. Your internet connection speed is going to be a lot lower than the max thruput on the wireless so no worries there.

If both you and your sister are downloading, then you will be slowing each other down as you only have a finite amount of internet bandwidth available. It won't be the wireless causing the slowdown.

If possible I'd avoid USB for networking - PCI wireless cards would be my preferred option.

Thanks for your help, think I will go for

Netgear DG834G Router and a Netgear WG311 54Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter then? Thinking about it I won't need two adapter as my PC will be right by the router so that can be wired

I've used the Netgear DG834GT on my Ukonline ADSL2+ connection and like people have said it's not the best peice of equipment in the world.

However there is apparently 2 versions of the GT - One with Texas instruments chipset and one with the Broadcom chipset so that may explain why some people like the router and some don't.

I can recommend the DG834G too. The stock firmware is crap, so upgrade to the latest one which fixes a massive amount of issues including disconnect ones. Once flashed up, it's a stupidly reliable bugger. I've not had a single issue so far on mine.

I have the 834GT as im with ukonline....Its fine and reliable if you just leave it. If you wanna change any settings forget it. Mines crashed 3 times this morning due to me setting up wireless!

There is only one version of the GT and it uses the Broadcom chipset. The DG834G on the other hand uses the TI AR7 chipset, which IMO is a better chipset.

The DG834G hardware has always supported ADSL2+, although they never got it working in the firmware until version 2.

The DG834G also has much more features with recent firmware revisions than the DG834GT (which IMO seems vastly undersupported by Netgear despite it being a newer product) including VPNC Basic Interop certified VPN endpoint support and Trend Micro Home Network Security.

i used to have the g now i got the gt has been running perfectly on bulldog 8mb sync at 8mb for like forever, i just got a dg834pn for my bro and the wireless is great on it, havent tried internet yet because its not activated yet at his
