Hey guys,

Does anyone know what the Netgear DG834G is like with long lines?

I used to have a DG834GT, but that was useless and very unstable on my ‘crap’ BT line? A problem shared with a lot of people with bad lines
I’ve recently been using a D-Link DSL-G604T which has been 100% stable on my line, but I loath its software interface :(
Having only ever used Netgear products in the past, I actually quite like their own interface – even though it is not that well received by everyone?

Anyway, I’ve got the chance to buy a DG834G for a very ‘reasonable’ price and I don’t know whether to take another chance on them…

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

SW.

dg834g works fine on my 60db line here - no dropouts at all and syncs with the exchange a lot quicker than my vigor 2600 did :)

We have a vigor at work that syncs fine on a 67db line with only 11db snr.

The Belkin f5d7630-4a is very good on marginal lines aparently, will maintain sync all the way down to 6db.

The TI chipset in the DG834 (and others) is generally regarded as being pretty decent with long lines.
The Belkin (might not be that Belkin, but I think so) is virtually identical to the 3Com ADSL router, and it certainly isn't fantastic with long lines.

Belkin and good aren't two words I'd associate with each other.

A couple of the DG834's I've got are on quite marginal lines, and they work perfectly, much better than the Zytel ones we originally had ever did.

im on a long line 58db, 1mb pipex, have both the 834GT and the 834G, The G is absolutely fine,But the GT with the latest firmware is very very poor.

I have found the GT to be poor (in general) at best :(

Agreed - I've just been looking on the Netgear forums again, and it seems they're still having some problems with this model

It would also seem that the DG834G and DG834GT have different modems in them? That would explain the why the DG834G is better on marginal lines maybe?

I think I'm going to give the DG834G a try? For the price I'm getting it for, it's worth the risk :D

Thanks guys,

SW.

Have you tried the .30 firmware? I have a long line and my GT is doing fine :)

Yes sure have as soon as it came out, was better but still dodgy.

Loads and loads of people have had nothing but trouble with the GT, like sam says, the netgear forums are full of people complaining.

tho' I really dislike the damn thing I find that rebooting it twice a day (morning and evening) seems to work.

I have a 15 meter cat 5 cable running from it to my comp upstairs.

if I forget to reboot then loading web pages is excrutiatingly slow - email is non existant and downloads are worse than 56k speed.

a quick trip into router home and a reboot puts everything back to normal.

I try and pull the power cable before using pc but it's not quite programmed into my sub conscience yet :P

moving house in the next few month and won't be on an adsl 2+ exchange but I will be glad to return to semblence of sanity with my beloved Draytek - will miss the speed but certainly not all the hassles.

DG834GT - I was forced into getting this when going to UKOnlines adsl2+ service.

Me too have a dg384gt with .32 firmware, just got connected on adsl2 but can only reach 3.3-4mbits at the moment with following:
Connection Speed 3734 kbps 762 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.5 db 33.8 db
Noise Margin 8.3 db 10.0 db

Where are you getting the .32 firmware from out of interest?
Personally I've never had an issue with my DG834GT - I've currently got over a month of uptime on it.

The latest firmware on the Netgear site appears to be .28
I managed to get hold of .30 directly from Netgear to do some testing with to fix a specific issue I was having (not stability as stability is fine on the .28).
.30 not only fixed the specific issue I was having - it was also reported by many to fix so many issue others were experiencing with this model.

After speaking to netgear they allowed me to place the .30 firmware available for download from my site (it almost took me down when it was placed there due to the amount of bandwidth used in the first few days and the file download really is small).
I've not seen the .32 firmware, however I've been out of the loop since before Christmas as .28 was fine for 99.9% of the time and the .30 firmware fixed a small issue I was having.

The latest firmware on the DG834G supports ADSL2+ though, doesn't it  ?

but are you running a long line?

I have the shortest possible line from the socket to the router but a 15meter cat5 to the comp....

the router supports adsl2+ out of the box
the firmware (for me) was an attempt to get some stability

I tried an experiment...
plugged my DrayTek in and ran it over 2 days - of course it limited my speeds to that of 8mb but not once did I have to reboot it.

but with the netgear that twice a day boot is essential.

it's an annoyance I can live with cause the through speed hits 1400-1600 - more or less double that of adsl.

if I wasn't moving to a non adsl2 area I would have sold the netgear in favour of just about anything else.
