Didn't know which section to post this but I have a NetGear 3700 router which has a USB port on it so you can use the router as a sort of NAS hub.

I connected my WD Passport 1TB drive to it and immediately on my Win 8 laptop (wifi) it shows in my network as both media server and networked drive.

I can even mount it in Windows on my laptop

However on my desktop (wired via homeplugs) it doesn't show at all as a network drive however it does appear as a media drive but it's not actually finding the disk merely the server (ie when i open it it's showing empty).

I've tried disabling the firewall in Win 7 to see if it's a problem.

Using netgear genie I don't think the plugs have a fire wall but if they can access the net through the router then they should also be able to see the USB drive on the router.

Very strange that the laptop with 8.1 finds it no problem but the desktop under Win 7 doesn't see it.

I want to be able to see it with the desktop to use it as a media center so both laptop and desktop can see and play the files on it.
