Ok I have recently moved to Ireland and have subscribed to a really great 9mbit service but.... the cable modem is only for one PC and my 2 sons are bending my ear over internet access and at the moment I dont have the funds available for a multi PC modem. I do however have an old Belkin adsl multi PC wired/wireless router. So I was wondering that if I have my PC feed through a nic to the cable modem and then put a second nic in my machine to feed the Belkin could the boys upstairs PCs be configured through a lan to gain access to the internet???

Any help will be much appreciated :)

Yep

heres how it would work:

Install router software first...then

cable modem --->rj45----> WAN PORT in router

router--->rj45---->ethernet port in pc

boys pc ---->rj45----->router(ports 1 - 4 only)

your pc ----->rj45----->router (ports 1 - 4 only)

That I believe should get all machines onto the internet....

If you have any problems once you have physically connected the machines to the router then :

Right click on the connection status in the bottom right of the screen
Click on support tab I believe it is
And see what IP address, Subnet mask, DNS and gateway addresses you have....Your IP address should be "assigned by DHCP" which means its connecting to the net via the router....if not then there is a sofware configuration problem....

The software configuration bit always gets me lol

Also you can go to www.practicallynetworked.com to see what help you can find there in terms of setting it up...they have great help sections there

Good luck....yes its possible :D

yep

BUT ensure when you plug a a rj45 into the cable modem the other end goes into the WAN PORT on the router.....

Then when you connect the pcs to the router these go from the back of each pc into either one of slots 1 - 4 on the router....

Finally you **** have one more rj45 from the router to the pc....

what version of windows are you running? More importantly are all the systems using the same version of windows?

If it's an ADSL router, it won't work because it has an ADSL WAN port, not an Ethernet port.

The only real solution, apart from using ICS which is a real mess, is to get a cable router like a Linksys WRT54GS.

So if it wont work with the router connected to the wan port, what if I use one of the connections for the PC ie port 1. Can I then not plug the other PCs into the remaining ports and use the router to redirect traffic???

any pcs u have will be plugged into ports 1 - 4

as ** ISP is cable/telewest it will not work if you dont have an DSL router or broadband router.....there is no way around that...not as far as I know....

I recently setup a wireless router using a cable modem and I had to swap the router from ADSL to DSL or broadband router...
