Hey

What are the security implications of using "LogMeIn" remote access software from my work network to my home network?

Short story. i had a row off my boss for connecting to my home pc from work because its a security risk.

Is he right in giving me a row or is he over reacting?

why did i do it? to see if it would work

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, look at it from your boss's point of view. You connect a company computer to your home network. He doesn't know how or why you're doing it, and doesn't really care. You could be bringing in malware or taking trade secrets off-site. Of course he's not going to be happy.

You can't just ask anyone "what are the security implications of doing X" because that's usually an impossibly hard question to answer, and that's even with all the information about the company, how it's network is set up, the sorts of information available on the network etc.etc.etc. Without that information, it's a meaningless question.

a lot of companies have certifications etc. some rely on network security and infrastructure of data integrity etc.

This could possibly jeopardise those. Basically it's a work tool, for work and your home machine does not fall into the scope of it.

If any of my users try doing something like that i'll give them (or talk to their boss) a rollocking and make up some repercussions. Scares them enough to not do it and they tell their co-workers. I can't have people thinking they can do what they want, they'll be wanting all sorts of holes in proxies for online radio etc. and that bandwidth is reserved for our gaming sessions!

In all seriousness there are quite a few security implications for connecting to a possibly unsecure network. And you are probably in breach of contract/usage policies anyway, so regardless of whether there is a threat or not, you;ve been a bad boy

From a 3rd party attack - not so much, logmein is relatively secure

From your bosses perspective - quite large, as mentioned you could be sending off company secrets etc.

Bottom line? You should be working at work not ******* about on your home machine! :p
(I am one of these people who thinks that websites like facebook etc should be banned in workplaces)

I'm lucky in that in my office we all have permanant VPNs to the work LAN from home anyway because we can and do work from home from time to time.

the reason for me doing it was just to see if it would work (experiment / research) and how it works because there could be use for the software in the coming years. as for using it to do personal things (facebook, messenger etc ) that would not happen.

growse i can see you point. i should have thought about the question a bit more.
