I move into my new house in about 1 months time it will need a new kitchen, bathroom, tlc to the electrics and a full central heating sytem. So i'm taking the opportunity to install a wired network. The main problem is that i know little about a networks, my experiance to date is a netgear adsl\router and a wireless network.

I plan to connect the office, lounge, kitchen, dinning room and the play room. I will want to stream movies to each location from the office aswell as music, pictures etc. I will also need a wireless network for the wifes laptop.

I will be lifting skirting boards and chasing walls for the wires.

My shopping list so far is

cat 5e or 6 cable
router\switch
wireless adsl modem
modular wall plates
crimping tool
rj45 connector
Ideally I would like 2 rj45 in a wall plates.

Is there anything I have missed?
Is it worth getting network cable tester?
Do you know of a websites with usefull guides?

thats about it, any tips and things to avoid would be helpfull.

cheers.

Its deffinately worth getting a cable tester.. A cheap one will cost you about a tenner and will do the job fine, will tell you if the cable you've just crimped actually works! :)

You will probably need a punch down tool and a set of crimps, the punch down tool for the modules and the crimps for crimping on RJ45 ends if you aren't using a patch panel.

I would go for CAT6 personally (and just have in my house) for the price difference its well worth doing it!

Its fairly easy running cables and patching them, after you've done a few you'll have the hang of it in no time.. :)
