Network trasnfer speed going through 2 switches ?

Hi,

Strange issue, since building my file server when transferring files between when the two pc's are on the same switch I get about 40 - 50 mb/sec which seems fine for a gb network.

However when I transfer files downstairs which goes through another gb switch first the transfer rate drops to about 10 - 15 mb/sec

Any reason why this might be ?

The switch upstairs is a netgear 5 port gb switch with a 10gbps backbone

The switch downstairs is a netgear 8 port gb switch with a 16 gbps backbone.

when I did the test no other machines were on.

mmm, is the cable connecting them terminated properly? Is it STP or UTP?

Hi,

I'm sure the cable is fine, I had to make it myself though as it is quite long ( going all the way down stairs ).

No idea if it is STP or UTP ??

best way to test from here..

use a 1m cable between the switches and test that performance

if it's fine, then it's the cable..

Have you checked the speed on the ports in the switch that provide the uplink? Are they auto config or set to 10/100/1000?

No offence, but if you've had to create it yourself and you haven't had a cable tester to prove it afterwards, I'd put £100 on it being the cable

Even if it looks right, there'll be a pair missing or similar.

In fact, I shall eat a Cat5 cable if it is not the cable.

lol, managed to have a look at this tonight.

found out in the end the PC was just connected as 100mb and not 1gb ??

All I did was unplug the cable and then plug it back in to a different port and it is now measured as 1gb. Transferring data at about 80mb/sec.

wierd !!

i have found this a few times with my gigabit switches (netgear) some ports must be faulty and only run 10/100 rather than 10/100/1000. not sure why...

Network cables use 4 pairs of wire. Only two of them are used for 100mb, if the cable doesn't seat properly it's possible you'd get a 100mb connection.
