New 2012 MBP IMAC Details inside

I'm not sure I'd buy a Pro without an ethernet port or DVD drive.

Lets get this straight... I work freelance, I take my laptop to offices. I have an 08 MBP, Superdrive, Ethernet port, DVI connection. It's all good, I carry one adapter (DVI - VGA) just incase.

As a professional I need to be able to hook up by ethernet for speed, I need to be able to put files on a DVD for delivery, and I need to be able to hook up to most computer monitors.

Mini display port is bad enough as carrying adapters is a bore. Thunderbolt is even worse because I don't know anyone with connectivity and Ill be damned if I'm carrying a rucksack of connectors to hook up to a friggin monitor.

If the new MBP was slightly cheaper, meaning you could, if you wanted, buy a DVD and Ethernet, would you still buy it? Or is integrated the only option for some?

Not Ideal but there are USB to ethernet adapters.

Luckily, Ethernet and DVD are irrelevant to me. When I go to meetings I turn on hotspot for internet, it means I don't have to hassle clients for internet access. This only works in cities of course, where 3G is 100% coverage.

Can't remember the last time I used a DVD drive, but I can see why this would be a ballache for those who do use them.

The ram is both cheap and mercifully easy to upgrade on iMacs. TBH you're probably better off getting the lowest ram one they offer (unless you need other upgrades as part of the kit/bundle) and just getting aftermarket ram upgrades yourself. Buying upgrades as part of the kit you pretty much always pay through the nose for.

Really want the new iMac, yet 4gb RAM again on the base model? Its just not enough anymore -.-

So annoying if those benchmarks are true.

I'd rather they offered 4GB and kept the price down and I could upgrade it myself than have them stick 8GB in and increase the price by a couple hundred quid. 4GB is plenty for anyone at a base spec. It's OS X. Not Vista.

I don't, when does anyone ever use optical drives now? Never, how often do I use the Ethernet on my laptop? Mayb once a year for a coulple of hours.

People sometimes are stuck in the past, on every single one of apples removal of 'standard hardware' in history they have been dead on the money. I remember when they never included floppy disk drives and people moaning that there will always be a need for one, how wrong we're they.

So because you don't use them, no one else does? I want a DVD drive for watching DVDs, for burning DVDs/CDs and for ripping music from CDs. I do not want to have to carry around a USB DVD drive and my MBP. Also, I have my MBP connected to ethernet while docked at home as it is much more reliable. You have to think about business users who do not have access to wifi.

I think the reason for this is just to get the thickness of the laptops down so they are as slim as possible. Well I'm sorry but I want function then form, not the other way around or I'll end up taking my business elsewhere

Why do you need to burn DVDs on the go, when you have those options, out of interest?

I don't want a desktop and a laptop. I would rather have one mobile solution that can do both. At the moment my MBP is able to do this if they remove the DVD/CD option then I'd need to reconsider my next purchase as still use the drive for listening to music and watching films while travelling.

Hopefully the whole of ocuk forums doesn't have to convert their posts in to baby speak for you?

Did I ever even come close to suggesting that? I made a post which stated my own personal opinion and personal preference. I then said if Apple didn't provide the goods I would go elsewhere. So no, I was not suggesting everyone else should put up with my want list.

I use my MBP as a portable laptop and I also dock it at home which is where I am most likely to burn DVDs and CDs. My desk solution at home is very tidy and I do not want DVD drives and usb to ethernet converters hanging from the side. Also you don't need to own the DVD or CD which is going in your drive, just today at work I needed to copy the contents of a DVD to my hard drive, if my MBP didn't have a DVD drive I'd of had to find a desktop pc which had one, then copy to a pen drive and then back to my laptop.

Why create all these extra issues for the sake of what, a thinner laptop? If I want an aesthetically pleasing laptop I'll buy one. I don't, so I'll buy a functional one first and foremost, and then perhaps I'll pick the one with the best aesthetics.

How often do people burn DVDs? If I need to transfer files, I just use ~cloud~ options (box.com, for me) or USB flash drives (which are ridiculously cheap). Then there's stuff like Airdrop/email/etc.

You are forgetting about a large chunk of users which are business users.

Yes there are commercial services like the ones you have mentioned above, but in the industry I work, those aren't deemed secure, infact the only internet transfer methods considered so are SFTP and Aspera.

Yes you can use USB and Portable Harddrives, but people and businesses aren't made of them. If you send them out, you have to wait for them to be returned. More often than not, if you've got something that will fit onto a DVD, you can safely send that out, it's cheap as chips and doesn't require returning.

But you can just have an external DVD drive in the office (sitting in a drawer when not in use, if you want). If you're on the go you can have you in your bag/car. Etc. I don't see it as a massive handicap, given the fact you can have an external drive/use alternative methods of transfer/etc. Obviously I've only ever used my MBP as a personal end user, and hardly ever use my DVD drive, but I can't see it as being a real problem.

But carrying in your bag a DVD Drive + Ethernet Connector = Bulkier.

Rather than just having it inside a laptop in it's current form factor... which is fine.

I'm just not seeing what it's saving by making the laptop marginally thinner.
By all means have those items removed, but that's what the MacBook Air is for, not the Pro model.

Well, Display Port is eventually going to become the standard. It's simply better than DVI and HDMI. I know that both Intel and AMD said they planned on phasing out support for LVDS and VGA in the next few years. The fact we still have machines and devices using VGA ports is ridiculous. VGA is nearly as old as I am.

Edit: There's 5 ports on the side of my 13" for ethernet, firewire, mini display port and 2 USB. Add in the power port, headphone port and SD card port and that's a lot of space right down the side of the machine. If I could I would like a power port, 6-8 mini display port/thunderbolt, headphone port and SD card port. Even 6-8 mini display ports wouldn't use as much space as is used now by what's there. Then you could have your multiple displays, ethernet, attached storage, photo/film devices and whatever else you want to plug in using one standard. You might need multiple cables, but you wouldn't need multiple types of cables with different connectors or requiring adapters and everything else.

It's not ridiculous, the tech works, there's nothing wrong with it.
