New 27" 2560x1440 monitor recommendations

You cant get that spec from an established company can you?

No and for good reason. LG, who makes the panels, know they aren't designed to run properly at that kind of refresh rate. It's a nice feature to have but people seem to be continually blowing it out of proportion and expecting performance to reflect that of a 120Hz TN panel monitor. When you're looking at average response times around 10ms then you just don't have the inherent responsiveness to make a good go of that kind of refresh rate. I'm not saying it's not a nice feature to have, but I am saying don't expect 'established companies' to follow suit in the immediate future. Not until the panels are ready.

Not to confuse your decision too much, but the S27A850D does have a slightly extended colour gamut, particularly in the blue region. Coupled with its native gamma of 2.4 medium and dark colours appear deeper and more saturated than they should. The gamma can be largely contained using a colorimeter (at the expense of shade range and contrast) but the colour gamut can not as there is no emulation mode for sRGB. Even after calibration certain blue shades in particular will have a little more 'pizazz' than they should. Calibration reports focusing on a relatively narrow shade band and spectrum won't show this but observation will. Coupled with the low haze screen surface the native settings in particular are actually quite nice for gaming, movies and general purpose. Photos also look life-like but any work requiring serious colour accuracy can be slightly problematic.
Okay that's good information...yes, it's given me more to think about, but I'd prefer that than making the wrong decision again. Thank you.

laggy, and out-dated styles don't make it worth the extra at all :p

Yamakasi Catleap for the win - you can buy two for the price of the dell! :D

cheap build, no real gaurantee. **** stand, shiny screen, hardly any inputs, no card reader, **** adjustments, noooo its cheap thats all it has going for it 2-300 quid compared to peace of mind for 500 quid

why buy cheap cause u can get 2 for the price of one when u can get a decent screen like a dell or an nec for a little more..

i know in 2 years time if i get a dead pixel i can get a free replacement or what ever thats worth more than saving couple hundred quid on a cheap looking monitor tbh..

and i like the industrial styling of the dell each to there own but shiney screens are yuch to me ...

So now the Dell 2713 has arrived I'm now wondering whether to go for that over the Samsung. Bearing in mind I usually shoot and process in sRGB so don't think the extra bulk of the 2711 will really be any use (especially with the AG coating).

Any input from Badass would be interesting in this as he didn't do a comparison at the end of the review on tftcentral!

I am currently reviewing the U2713HM and have had experience with both the U2711 and S27A850D. If you require a monitor for photography within the sRGB colour space then the U2713HM would be the best option. Its native colour gamut extends slightly past sRGB but not quite to the extent of the Samsung and certainly nowhere near that of a wide gamut unit with over 100% NTSC (i.e. the U2711). It has an excellent sRGB preset that restricts the colour gamut very tightly to sRGB (and doing this from a base that is closer to there does give a better end result). The screen surface is also really good on the U2713HM I find - quite comparable to the Samsung if not a little lighter and certainly worlds away from the grain of the U2711.

The last point to note is that the U2713HM is set up much better than the Samsung with respect to native gamma handling. If you are going to use a colorimeter to further improve accuracy then it wouldn't be forcing things as far away from the native comfort zone of the monitor and as a result you shouldn't have any major problems with a crushed colour range or induced banding.
