Hi all,
Got a BenQ EW3270U 32" 4k monitor. Really happy!

However the only game I play is Lockheed Martin Prepar3D.

Now my FPS have gone down the toilet. Specs as follows:

i7 9700k @ 5.0GHZ
16Gb DDR4 3000MHZ RAM
Geforce 1070 FE

Budget isn't great really otherwise I'd punt for a 2080ti.

Any recommendations? I have read good things about the 2070S. Or maybe I wait until January sales?

Thanks everyone,
Alex.

Have you tried dropping the game's settings? Have you checked where the bottleneck lies?

BTW I note that Lockheed Martin recommend the GTX 1080 Ti.

lose AA?
Go to a lower res?

I’ve not touched P3d since I heard about the new MSFS so will almost certainly wait for that to upgrade.

CPU is more than fine so its going to come down to how much you are willing to spend on a new GPU really.

I went from a 1080ti to a 2080ti when I picked up a 4k monitor and it handles it great. My 1080ti was fine at 3440x1440 but that jump to 4k and everything turned up really taxed it. For me, AA isnt that important at 4k so thats the first to go then its going to be turning stuff from ultra to high until you find a sweet spot.

I’ve turned AA off completely and want to run at 4k as that’s the whole point really. Having just bought it!

I have debated returning it and going down the ultra wide route but I do really like the monitor and I got it at a decent price.

There are no good upgrade options atm from a 1070 I'm afraid, the 2080Ti is a decent card but way overpriced for the performance on offer. You either pay the money or wait it out I'm afraid. Yes a 2070S is obviously better than the 1070 but is it enough to warrant the upgrade and will it serve 4k content??? No not really it would be a stop gap solution imho only worth considering if you can sell the 1070 for a good amount.

Some good news is we are expecting more info on AMDs Big Navi 23 in Jan, its unlikely to be a release but its definitely coming.

Over 100 FPS?

Depends what game and if you are willing to tone down a few of the extreme settings,so to speak.

FPS will fluctuate a lot more than, say 1440p, and a 2080ti handles it nicely but to be fair its harder to tell exact details given Ive always had GSync enabled. Its not going to lock 100 fps 24/7,. but tbh I doubt even a pair of them would do that to every game.

Is there a game you have in mind here?

Doing a little googling, it seems that Lockheed Martin Prepar3D supports SLI. Not a lot of information out there though, maybe make a post on the games official website/forum and ask if anyone is running a 1070 or similar in SLI at 4K? You can pick them up second hand for around £150 at the moment, not something I'd normally consider but if performance results are decent and considering it's the only thing you play, it could be an option.

Shy of that selling your 1070 and adding the proceeds to a new GPU is your only real option.

Thanks for the comments. I am already regretting buying the 4K monitor. I may return it now having suffered so much with the poor performance in the sim. Makes me seem sad though as I do truly like the monitor. Only paid £300 for it and the colours just pop and I love the high resolution when web browsing etc. Definitely wouldn’t want 1440p at 32” screen size.

I might wait until new year and then see if a 2070S is going at a decent price.

I'm into my flight sims, mainly FSX & FS9 due to the huge number of add on's I've forked out for over the years, I used to have an i7 4790 (a slug of a cpu compared I'd guess to yours!) with a 1070 which ran the M$ sims great but struggled to run well with P3D (which I've had a good play about with) I got a 4K screen and it tanked.

So, I got a second 1070 in SLI (mainly for my other games because FSX does not support SLI) and it made a big difference subject to settings and location - frame rates move between 35 to 60 depending on where I am . At a high intensity airport with bad weather I might drop to 25-30 but that's an exception, previously 30 fps average was a result!

I've now sold the 1070's and have a Zotac 1080ti Amp Extreme because it boosts all my games rather than just the ones that support SLI but, I have to say the SLI 1070's bettered it believe it or not!

I currently get 30 - 55fps with the 1080ti in P3D, my point being given you can bag another 1070 on the MM for ~£160 thats your cheap upgrade path imo because whilst SLI is meh to many, its fine if the one title you play supports SLI - which P3D does - so happy days!

I'm now wondering if you have a board that only supports Crossfire or no dual GPU at all.......

I have the following motherboard. I have been looking at used 1080Tis too. However I would also like to future proof my PC with MSFS2020 coming next year.
Aorus Z390 AORUS ELITE

For 4k you want 5700XT / Vega 7 / VEGA 64 or a 2070 Super / 2080 as a minimum really and as others had said 2080 Ti is where it’s at but they cost a fortune.
