New 5850 aint working

Ok scrap that, Ive got resolution set right, man this looks different to my 8800. Cant work out if its crisper or what lol.

Think ill hunt latest catalyst and install that afterburner thing to see temps

Are you on the latest BIOS? Also the fact that the motherboard is fairly old, it might be a hardware limitation thats causing this, or maybe they still are working on a BIOS fix for it, seems like Asus is very quiet on the matter.

Yeah Justin it looks like it must be a Bios issue. Ive always maintained my PCs since I was 15 but Im crap at the whole BIOS situation.

Im honestly clueless about updating them, I think I did it once on an old pc years ago but Ill have to follow a guide or something for this.

Can it be done of a USB drive for example?

Ok ill really put it simply for you hedge.

BIOS is just the Basic Input Output System for your computer. To update;

1. Download the latest file (1406 in your case) the file will be 1406.bin most likely.
2. Extract the file out of the zip folder and put it onto the root of a USB key.
3. Hit DELETE and enter the BIOS screen.
4. Go to TOOLS, then EZ FLASH UTILITY hit Enter.
5. You will get a display of options from a heirarchy, press tab to select C: , D: or E: whichever is the selected USB Pen.
6. Hit enter on the .bin file and update.
7. Let the BIOS update, will mostly update the CHECKSUM as it did on mine, let it post again then customize your settings again to your liking.

BTW the conflict is nothing to do with the actual BIOS its the Nforce Chipset. Although i am not certain whether there could be a possible fix with a BIOS.

(edit hopefully it all works eventually for you mate, must be a nightmare! I love this board and im not upgrading just yet.)

Thanks for that little step by step guide mate. Ill follow that soon.

Im still in windows and I tried crysis. The game ran smoother than it did on old card (as expected) but makes a bit of a whiney noise. High pitched. Nothing major. Just noticed it when the pc was running a game.

Im gonna take a risk now and reinstall my sound card, close everything up and attempt to boot again.

Would my phone work as a usb drive?

Cant even get into chuffing bios now lol. I press delete and it hangs. So sod it. Im back in windows. Ill make do for now :(

ontop of this Ive just installed a new sound card, and now I cant get flippin sound haha. I disabled the onboard sound in bios (i tried sound card before gfx), and now stuff is conflicting on startup :(

When I got home I had a soundcard and gfx card with me, I installed soundcard first. It was recognised and I installed its drivers. I didnt get any sound so I disabled the onboard sound in bios. then once I got back to windows I shut down, then installed my gfx card..

that was playing up so I took sound card back out.

Now that I have the gfx working I put the soundcard back in, it asked for drivers again and I installed em, restarted, yet no sound. Its like something is conflicting with them. Maybe I havent disable onboard stuff properly.

AND!!.. to top it off, my pc now wont stream video via youtube etc for more than 3 seconds. It does 3 seconds then freezes.

I'd suggest that the whining noise you heard when gaming was your psu having a heart attack. I could be wrong but thats my guess.
