New 7900GS or 2nd han x1950XTX

No.

1950XTX will waste the 7900GS.
But if you want nVidia card the closest budget 7900 that will get close to the same performance levels is the 7900GTO overclocked to GTS speeds (around the £200 mark).

lol :p I love the way some people compare hardware, so brutal! :D

Second hand X1950XTX here.

Was thinking of a G80 but I don't fancy taking a dremel to my Sugo.

Firstly, the card is huge and most of all... heavy. Not that it makes much difference :p - but it's the first thing you notice.

And it's fast. Very fast. In fact, I can't max out any of my games and make it struggle. More than adequate for an average gamer's needs.

If you can get one for a good price, i'd highly recommend it. But don't pay the new price with G80 starting at £350 and R600 imminent, it's not worth £300.

Or did you mean 2 x 7900gs in SLI against a x1950xtx.

This is kind of what I am contemplating, but I am finding the pricing of cards currently to be very frustrating, especially as I am only looking to keep whatever I get for about 6 months (until the r600 and Nvidia refreshes out)

The 1950xtx's are just far too expensive, considering the 8800gts's are not much more expensive, and perform way better. Cheapest I have found a 2nd hand one for is £250, but I am not sure that is cheap enough.

With the 7900 cards though, I keep getting caught up with the fact that the Nvidia cards can not do HDR + AA. But I can get 2 x 256MB 7900gs for just over £200... and while they might not handle both HDR and AA, they should allow me to turn on most eye candy and have a decent frame rate.

I am trying not to spend much more than £200. I am only looking for something which will perform a bit better than my x1900xt 256mb, as I am not happy with its performance (as I stated in another post, I was generally happier with the 7900gt I had before it).

I am sure most people wonder why bother upgrading if its only for 6 months, but its simply that I am not happy with my current card, and it makes gaming frustrating.

2 7900gs cards have a doubled chance of failure :p

On the contrary, if one were to fail the other could work alone until a replacement arrived for the broken one... if you only had one card and it broke.. your'e LANGUAGE.

I had my mind set on a 2nd hand X1900XTX, they're around the £220 to £235 mark, but never thought about 2x7900GS's. Are they hard to set up in SLI mode? Plus i'm replacing a Shuttle with a 9800Pro which sounds like a jet on afterburn when running UT2004 - are 2x Gfx cards going to be noisy?
