New Build Advice Please

If i have no plans to add another graphics card will I need the 650W PSU?
Also what controller cards am I going to need?

I think i've more or less decided on a spec now:

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £231.98

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560Ti OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £191.99

Asus P8P67 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) £124.99

GeIL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz VALUE PLUS Dual Channel (GVP38GB1600C9DC) £85.99

XFX Pro 650W Core Edition Power Supply £68.99

Creative Inspire A500 5.1 Speaker System (51MF4095AA004) £46.99

Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black £44.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000528AS) £43.99

Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3) £35.99

2 x Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £27.98

Total: £903.89

you may as well stick with that psu, its a good price for such a item.

Did you want a modular psu?

and by control cards what do you mean? that build needs nothing to work.

SSD? maybe?

The case comes with a few USB ports on the front but i'd like them on the back too. I'm guessing I need to buy a usb controller card to throw in the back of the case? The same goes for Network card?

I'll stick with the PSU then, thanks.

doesnt worry about USB you'll end with probably 10 ports in total including 2 3.0 ones.

I'd go with that. 650W is plenty of power for a single card setup, and I wouldn't consider going under 600W. Note that you do not want to max your PSU usage, but keep it in the 'power band'. 650 is about right so it wont get over-stressed. You can buy a cheap power monitor and see how much power is drawn from the plug. Given an hypothetical efficiency rating (80 / 85%), you can work out how much power is drawn at the other end of the PSU.

Why 2 optical drives? :)

EDIT : SSDs are great little devices. I love mine and it works a treat as a OS / program drive. Just need to keep an eye on it being filled with garbage, especially on the User and Temp folders. £100 64GB, and you wont be looking back.

I'd go with that. 650W would be stretched with SLI and the rig you have already. But imo it's not really worth considering over upgrading a single card in the future. Plus the 560ti is fantastic out of the box and is CUDA-enabled. Nothing wrong with ATI's though.

They're so cheap that I figured it'd be worth having to save changing discs sometimes and also to save the hassle of writing to hdd if i want to make copies of a cd/dvd.

amazing thanks, thats just what i wanted to know. Having not built before i thought perhaps the MOBO had to be linked to the ports at the back.

The cases front panel USB just connect into headers at the bottom of the motherboard inside, same with the microphone and 3.5mm headphone sockets, there will be a HD audio connector on the board.

Any suggestions on a decent wireless adapter?

No idea sorry, just use a cable to the modem?

Will do when at home, but whilst at university i'll only be able to get wireless.

will something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-001-TP&groupid=46&catid=1597&subcat=1622 be better or more suitable than just buying a usb one?

OK final build spec then:

Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3)

Coolermaster Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black

TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless-N PCI Adapter (TL-WN851N)

2 x Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Total (Inc. Delivery): £930

Please let me know if I have made any mistakes or overlooked anything. Will i need to buy any cables at all with this rig or does everything come included with the components?

All the cables needed come with the motherboard, case, psu.

the Venom cooler comes with some white standard thermal compound, if you want to drop a extra degree C or two, then some Artic Cooling MX-4 fancy stuff could be added.

Awesome, well thanks so much for all the help everyone. It's been priceless.

Out of interest when do the "weekly deals" end? quite a few of my components are currently on offer.

Brilliant, gives me a bit of time to think about whether I can afford to throw in an SSD as well.

Thanks again for all the advice,

Ed

I've just realised I can save over £60 if I get an i5 2500k instead of the i7 2600k. Looking at their comparisons there really isn't much in it at all. The i5 2500k is still a great deal better than the i7 950 i was originally planning to buy:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=100

If I downgrade to an i5 2500k I wouldn't have to change anything else in this build would i? Will i regret it though?

thanks,

Ed
