Friend of mine has tasked me with sorting out a new gaming build for him for 1.5k all in for everything as he doesn't have a pc currently. I'm think around 1100 for the pc and then leave 400 for monitor and peripherals.
Where would your money be going?
I'm think..
5600x
b450 tomahawk ii (don't see the benefit of b550 really)
32gb 3200 ram vengeance RGB

That's take it up towards 500 and then trying for a 3070fe?

I can't find a pre build on OcUK or anywhere that I'm happy with really that falls within the budget.
I have a case and a good psu also which he can have so think building may be better but I don't think he wants to wait for an FE drop...

Can leave off the gpu as we will try to grab a 3070fe and will use a 980ti for the meantime until we get one.
Is 32gb overkill? Would 16gb be enough? And would b550 be be worth the extra over the b450?

6 core doesn't exactly have reserves for running things on background of heavier gamer.
Though in some years there should be high core count AM4 CPUs available at discount prices as upgrade path.
B550 boards certainly can last heavier use with far better CPU VRMs than in B450.

If he wants to keep the PC for a long time then B550 would make sense as would 32gb ram.

I went with a B450 as it was cheap and did all that I need, the same with 16gb ram then put the savings towards a better CPU and GPU 5800X + RTX 3080 as those are bits that really make a difference especially the GPU. I do plan to upgrade again in a couple of years to either AM5/whatever Intel has if it's better though so wasn't interested to sink more cash that necessary into AM4.

Pretty much thinking the same as you. He's not going to want to upgrade anything to soon so b450 should suffice and I can put the extra towards 32gb. I know it's a badly optimised game but just sitting with warzone, stream labs and discord open, windows reports over 16gb usage so I feel 32gb ram is probably needed
