want to buy a new wired cable router, but don't know whats a good one to get? Want to spend about £40, any suggestions? Having a firewall would be handy, but just needs to be reliable and quick. I have a separate modem.

Linksys models are reliable and quick :) - a part of cisco too so you know it's gonna be at the very least half decent.

My WRT54G v2 (latest firmware made it WRT54GL !) works awesomely

Wireless and a much higher feature set (especially with the third party firmware floating around - as long as you don't get a v5 WRT54G/GS).

are they common these days?

You can check what version one is on the box at stores, usually says version by the barcode area

The v5s are pretty common, that's why I'd suggest a WRT54GL (which is essentially a v4 WRT54G).

i cant see the "L" version for sale only the "S" ?

The S is the Speedbooster version. Same story, the v5 models are lobotomised.
Can't point out anywhere that has them, but they do exist. Be nice if the shop had 'em.

Wll mine is not the L version but the latest official firmware made it an L version so I guess all previous versions become L with the new firmware

so I'm pretty stuck on where to pickup one of the good models? The S version isn't good either?

btw appreciate all the help given.
