I'm looking to replace my 05 2.0 TDCI Zetec Focus early in 2010. I've had it since it was one year old, and in that time I've added just over 50,000 miles to it. I've tried to add as much detail below as possible to outline my car use.

I used to do a fair few miles each year, but since both my job and position has changed. Last year I clocked up less than 6,000 miles on the car, and rarely used it outside of weekends. I now use my motorbike 10 months a year for my 6 mile commute to work, and the car gets use at weekends only. However, every other weekend it needs a long run, when I visit my son who lives 135 miles away.

I like a bit of comfort for this regular journey, the vast majority of which is spent on motorways at a decent speed - A12, M25, M23, A23 - Ipswich to Brighton to Ipswich. I normally travel early on Saturday mornings and late Sunday evenings, so the roads are generally quite clear.

The Focus gets just over 50 mpg on these journeys, but the mileage has dropped now to well under the point where I think a diesel can be justified - servicing is expensive and it just 'feels' like it doesn't like being say unused for a couple of weeks.

My new work position demands something a little more executive. I've driven a couple of 5 series BMWs, but really only gelled with the 2007 facelift model. The 530d drove very well, but I think I should avoid diesel again. The 530i felt great, but both could be just out of reach for next year, except with silly mileage on them. I seriously considered a Boxster in the summer when prices were really deflated, but I need 4 doors plus I have the bike for thrills.

I've considered Audis, but there doesn't seem to be anything outstanding from the A3 and A4 models. Mercedes' range is confusing to me (never really looked at them before), and they all seem under powered and under specced. Finding a decent Alfa seems difficult, and I (rightly or wrongly) have a nagging concern over reliability.

What I'm looking for is a car that will have:

- decent mileage for a 2/3 year old (not 150k+ rep mobiles)
- comfort
- power adequate to have a bit of fun if I want, without looking for track day bhp
- the ability to sit unused for a few weeks without too much complaint
- good interior spec, with excellent controls, facia, technology etc.

I'm leaning towards a facelifted 5 series, if I can find one, but would like any ideas on alternatives. Insurance isn't an issue - clean licence and long no claims. I really don't want to go over budget at all, as I don't want to look at finance. I've based my calculations on the Focus being worth around £4k in a few months time, and I'll make the remainder up in cash.

Thanks!

1.Audi A4 2litre with either petrol or diesel engine and s-line spec.
2.BMW 3 series 320D in M spec
3.Volkswagen Golf R32 or Gti

Few ideas for you! :)

Isnt it great when people just reel off names of cars without bothering to explain why they suit the OP?

You suggest a 320d BMW or a Golf R32. Nice - a 50mpg car and a 25mpg car. If you are going to suggest an R32 why waste time with the 320d, go for the 330i

not sure if you can find facelift 530is for under £15k..
if you don't mind a smaller car get a 330i, although the choice is much smaller than for diesels, much like the E60.
and most E90s seems to have really crap spec

Do you need a practical car? Something like a 2.0Tdi scirocco would be suitable for your needs?

Edit: Just read you needed 4doors, skim read fail :D

Some sort of practicality is needed.

I'm disappointed by the lack of inspiration, but I guess that just reflects the choices that are on offer at the moment.

Don't get me wrong - I like diesel - I enjoy the power delivery once the turbo spins up. It is just that they are more expensive to own, and my mileage now (6,000 or so per year) doesn't really justify it.

I do also have this sort of mental block where I like the revs being low. I like cruising on the motorway at 2k RPM rather than 2.5 or 3. This is a personal failing, and completely irrational. But then, so much about car ownership is based on this...

Hmm, from what you say about power delivery then a diesel would suit you better, that said, I'm a bit wary myself of a BMW diesel in case it goes bang (which is unlikely in the main with the petrol variants)

On the other hand, my petrol 328i will do around 70 @ 2k rpm.....

You seemed fussed about reliability, maybe a Lexus GS?

Lexus GS/IS was going to be suggestion, would be well worth a look if the German execs leave you a bit cold?

Also how about a Honda Accord? New ones look lovely (especially in touring guise). However the diesel engines inavariably are the one's to go for. I have to confess i have no idea what the Honda NA engines would be like.

Golf GTI DSG Laughably relaxing on a long journey with cruise control, great power (especially bluefinned) for when you want fun although the facia isnt the greatest.

Off topic, GZ on MoH Fox, long overdue imho.

Are you sure?

I did say around 2k, iirc its about 2200 rpm, pretty much the same as my e38.

I'll wind it upto 70 later and take a pic just for you shall I? :D

Please do :p

But then you'll jum down my throat for being an unsafe moron, oh! hang on I'm a truck driver, so its expected.....

Will do, just for you mate! :D

An E60 shape 5 series sounds like a good bet.

Personally, i'd be getting a 3-4 year old XJ at your budget. An S-type is also a good bet, I appreciate that some people don't like the looks but they're good value and ride/drive well.

Jags aren't for everyone but you didn't mention them in your post so thought i'd make sure they're being considered :)
