Looking to order my 3 series M340i this coming week. As long as I get it before March next year (end of current PCP) I'll be happy. I'll update with whatever the dealer says tomorrow about how long I am going to have to wait. Hopefully eight months out for a factory order BMW is enough time, in the current climate.

It's cos it looks crud and is too slow.

It isn't too slow at all - it's an every day family hatchback, a replacement for something like a 1.6 Focus or a 1.4TSI Golf.

The idea that every electric car has to do 0-60 in 2 seconds is really very silly. Most people just want an ordinary car.

Was that for a brand new car made to your specifications? Not bad if the dealer didn’t have a build slot already!
Quite a simple, small car though in fairness.

It's a Smart Fortwo, what specifications are there beyond paint colour? :p

I think the point was you chose from very broad cookie cutter "options" rather than selecting from a list of hundreds of different bits and bobs. Merc have been looking to reduce the list of options to simplify manufacturing for ages. The Smart car is a big stride in that direction.

There was an old wives tale that the only way to guarantee a brand new Ford Escort back in the day was to spec it with something 'odd' like a sun roof and A/C. A lot of them were showing up to Customers with rust starting from sitting so long. N.b. my high school Economics teacher may have invented this story.

motor manufacturer interview r4@one
suggested that pricing(for 2nd hand too) and delays were predominate in audi/bm/merc brands, he said a behavioural change from customers, more, now wanting, in, on the premium segment;
also reiterated semiconductor + avoiding public transport, motivation.

Not just Merc - it's industry wide. All permutations and combinations have to be tested for CO2 under WLTP, so reducing the available options makes a huge amount of sense.

Not sure its just premium brands, its basically a chip shortage, will affect most marques. This is what VW sent out, luckily I sourced another car. :D

I know someone who’s getting a Q5 TFSIe delivered in a fortnight and it was ordered in March. They’re built in Mexico so perhaps it’s just cars which are built in Europe that are being delayed?

Thats still much much longer than normal. Whats that, potentially 22/23 weeks? I have always got my factory built Audis in around 10-12 weeks previously. And since then lead times have got longer.

I ordered my Merc on 1st May and expected delivery date is 15th November and already I have had a warning email from Merc that the "Connect Me" part of my car may not be available and will have to be fitted at a later date (so no traffic updates or internet connection or pre heating the car before I set off)

I have no confidence that the 15th November date wont slip either. They are not even starting to build it until 20th August.

Thats why I bought a car that was in UK stock

But even that isn't a guarantee. Theres a fix due for a stock fault and they wont release it until thats sorted.

Is it a hybrid or an electric? If no to both of those, it won't have pre-heat anyway.

Hybrid and does have app controlled pre heat but since all internet connectivity may be missing I will lose that amongst many other features like seeing its charge level, where the vehicle is, remote unlocking, being able to give somebody else permission to drive the car via an app on their phone, traffic re routing, updates to software, internet radio, spotify, etc etc.
