New car for other half help us decide

What? It's a different type of car entirely, how can that be the case?

How's it a different type of car entirely? They literally use the same engines, suspension, interior components. The vitara has something like 10mm more ground clearance and is about a foot longer. It's a slightly bigger hatchback than the Swift.

Lol no, the 1.4 turbo does not come with 4wd on the swift. The 1.4 vitara sport has 4wd as standard.

Right...so a specific model of the vitara has 4wd. Not the standard model and like I said, the 4wd system is available on the swift as an option. Like I said.

So to my last post, does the vitara have 4wd? As an option.

Does the swift have 4wd? As an option.

So what's your actual point?

The Swift is a small hatchback and the Vitara is a small SUV.

I appreciate you are dead against people buying cars they don't need, though. Which is why I am sure you've never owned a 5 metre long twin turbo 3 litre 6 series or a 2 seater Porsche :D

The 6 series was perfect for the long distance driving I was doing at the time, exceptionally comfortable with a good size boot for clothes and equipment, plus the more frugal diesel engine vs the equivalent powered petrol. I now don't regularly require a car so bought one for fun - the Porsche with only 2 seats being perfect again for that. See - cars bought according to needs.

You do get that a small SUV is essentially just a hatchback with a higher ride height, don't you? In this case - as I pointed out the difference is as little as 10mm! Now whilst I would love an extra 10mm on the end (or girth) of my shlong, I'm not sure in the automotive world it's exactly class distinguishing. Take the 3 and 5 series - the Swift and Vitara are closer in many dims than the 3 and 5!

@Thebug My ex was in a similar position to your partner, she'd owned - and loved - her Focus for ~5 years and wanted an SUV / Crossover type for no other reason than she just wanted one.

She chopped in her Focus and got a then 5 month old Kuga which she quickly found to be too big, cumbersome compared to the Focus and crap on fuel, she took a hit and gave it back after about a week.

Then had a 1 Series which she liked but was extremely disappointed by the crap "service" from BMW (Namely Knights Stafford after a debacle over some EGR recall or other) and has since we split up she has traded it for an 18 plate Ecosport ST-Line (why I don't know!) which she likes compared to the Kuga but admits it and none of the others have lived up to her previous Focus as an all round car and is probably going back to a Focus in the new year.

In short, if she's got a good reason for an SUV type then by all means, but she may find the novelty soon wears off as I think my ex has found.

A high spec 520d would have been even more perfect. And you don't race so why do you need a fast Porsche?

It's almost like we pick cars based on more than just pure utility versus efficiency isn't it...

It's not a fast Porsche, it's a slow Porsche :p

As for the 6, sadly I required power for overtaking which just isn't there in a 4cyl plus there's the added refinement of the 6. Now a 530 or 535 was on the cards except the spec of the 6 was superior. How many 5s out there have adaptive sus, HUD, full leather interior etc?

No you didn't.

You might have wanted it, but you didn't require it. Just like very few people require an SUV, but want one...

Sadly, no. Given where I live we have a lot of country roads with short stretches available for overtaking. Often having to overtake dawdling morons in SUVs who can't handle corners at speed as it happens.

Need is a stupid term to use with purchasing cars.

No one needs anything more than a basic cheap car that starts and drives.

Anything else beyond that is simply a desire/want.

Nobody needs a powerful car for overtaking, you could just not overtake. You might want one though, to make your driving experience better.

Nobody needs a jacked up supermini posing as an SUV. They might want one though, as they prefer the experience of owning/driving/looking at it, whatever.

You don't have to overtake them at all, and I'd question how safe they are anyway if nothing less than 320bhp will safely propel you past them.

I do not like SUV's. I have driven some very, very good SUV's quite extensively and I failed to see anything about them which made them as good as, let alone better, the saloons on which they were based. But I appreciate this is my personal view, and that some people might just 'want' one - they make like how they feel, they may like how they look. Just as I like how my 5 Series looks and feels.

Back to the OP they are both much of a bland muchness so just buy the Kia for the longer warranty! If it’s what she wants she is probably going to be happy with either car they are ridiculously popular for a reason! I’d make her drive one back to back with a focus that costs the same though just so she can appreciate the difference and maybe change her mind!
