New Car: Golf GTI MrkV

No recoding was needed.

I simply took the old one out, fitted the GPS antenna and plugged the new one in. I bought my one from a guy on ebay for around 450. I sold me old radio that came with the car for 300 so it was a very cheap upgrade.

I bought one new in 2008, was probably the best all-round car I've owned, miss it quite a lot.

Have those wheels been refurbed or are they just bad pictures? They are supposed to be diamond cut aren't they?

The standard 17" wheels (as per the OP) have just a standard alloy finish. It's the optional 18" Monza II's that have the diamond finish, nearly cried when I kerb'd one of mine, quite hard to refurbish apparently.

The car is a 2005 model and I paid just over 8k from a dealer.

Yes, it has zenons, parking sensors etc. All four wheels were referbed before purchase.

The idea of a remap does interest me but I would be a little concerned that I would be increasing the chance of something major going wrong. Are the GTI's components fairly good at handling a power increase?

Ah well that's handy. I was under the impression that any non-like-for-like swap required a recode. Maybe that's just the latest models.

Anyone that tells you a remap won't increase the risk of something breaking is telling fibs and anyone that applies some random percentage figure as to the extra wear and tear should really be doing the lottery tonight with those kind of prediction skills.

Fact is that you will be putting more strain on the drive train, engine and turbo.

At the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice. See how it feels after 6 months and decide what it is you are after :)

Did the dealer give you any warranty with it?

Including recoding via VAGCOM? I doubt that.

Worth doing though, however the units were ~£500 on Ebay last time I checked. Most of them seem to come from Poland.

Very few of them need coded, the only reason to to code them is if you have a highline computer and MFSW. The red and white displays use a different protocol so if you remove a RNS510 from a car with a red cluster display and put it in a newer car with a white display it will need coded and vice versa. The unit will still work without coding but the cluster won't display the audio/satnav graphics and the MFSW will only be able to control the volume of the stereo, going between cars with the same display no coding is needed.

So few MK5 Golfs have a highline computer as it was a £45 option on its own or £400 with a MFSW very few owners paid for it so putting a RNS510 in a MK5 Golf is generally plug and play and easily done in 15-20minutes. Even if it needs coded it takes only a couple of minutes with VCDS/Vagcom

The RNS510 is a superb unit with the latest firmware/maps allows full postcode searches which is rare for a factory unit. The internal HD makes the system very quick easily quicker than a Kenwood and Alpine Sat Nav system I have used making it a bargain for £450-500.

To the OP, nice buy with the important extras. I would retrofit a MFSW, highline cluster and RNS510 with bluetooth to finish it off.

That looks really smart, be careful with those wheels!

Also;

1. RNS upgrade, I'd double check you dont need a CANBUS upgrade, newer head units can flatten the battery.

2. If you go with the map, get a new piston type DV, about £45
