Does insurance even drop that much at 21 anyway?

I thought it was proven a while ago now that it is a steady decline in prices rather than a rapid drop at a certain age?

I paid £1400 for my Escort at 20 with no ncb, at 21 with a years ncb the same car was £500 to insure. I don't know if that was the age or the ncb though.

Yeah but my situation is different in that I had an accident within about three months of driving. Also the fact that in a crash the Mini is most likely to be written off. My crash was my fault, I was being a bit of a douche on a b road going to fast round corners in the middle of june and while I did brake, the car slowed down to say 10mph and then hit a tractor which had a long flatbed trailer on the back. The only good thing to come out of it all was that it didn't smash in the front end, instead the Mini is so low down the steel bar which you see below the brake lights on this HGV type motors when straight in my windscreen.

Insurance company took it away looked at it and agreed to repair it but I was without a car for about 2 months while they repaired it. From what I could tell at the time, new windscreen, new bulk head (don't know what it is called on a mini - pillar...), new dash, new bonnet (stripes etc), new wipers.

One way or another and from what I can remember it cost them in total £2300.

I really think it was that close to being a complete write off. :(

EDIT: went to was the car, it was jam packed full of about 20 cars so had a bit of a wait. I now know that my heater does work but because it basically has a switch to turn it on - footwells, demist front window or off completely (which I thought meant the vents on the dashboard). Basically can feel nice warm air on my feet when the car has warmed up enough, however as soon as I switch it to front window its like no air from the heater is going to it, cold air when driving will though. Then when looking at the switches I felt a decent amount warm air just coming out a gap between the heater box(?) but nothing on windows.

Hxc, got any ideas before I put into my local garage? :o

EDIT: and to answer the question about thread de rail meant well, I guess muscle cars are in my blood - my dad had this when he was in his 20s, brought it in Saudi and drove it, brought it back here, sold it for the same price he brought it. :p

Also looking into air con for the Mini which can be done with OEM Rover parts but I can only find like one Mini garage that will do it and they are in surrey. :o

God I just hate my parents sometimes. I argue with them, my mum is like you can't afford blah how can you consider paying over £2k for insurance. My dad then says if I want he will take me to a dealer/whatever car craft type place and then says I've seen advertised 0% Apr on a 1.2 diesel 09 plate corsa deal. I show them the quotes how bloody engine size isn't everything and how if i brought a smart for four 1.1 for more money (newer) I'd end up spending more on insuring it (£300 more than mini) more money servicing and she's like that Mazda is 10byears old with 80k miles saying because it will need a million repairs and says you want a brand new car. I even explain how Mazda is cheaper to run even if it breaks down it's easy to fix,- it's ****ing Japanese.

No one else my age has these issues for christs sake my mum thinks I insure a car more than 1.1 and the mini is bloody 1.3.

Idiots.

The trick is not to get your parents involved whatsoever in your motoring decision. That way they have absoultely no right to complain when you want to get something that they don't approve :).

Can't you play the "It's my money" card?

The mini is in her name and "belongs to her" but then she's like you can't a new until you sell it - and if I sell it I only get half and the other half goes to my sister who hasnt even passed/drives the car in the first place.

**** it - I want this : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1829845.htm

Admiral insurance online quote is least 3999, can most likely get a specialist insurer to go cheaper, I do 6000 miles if that at the moment - the hell do I want a 1.2 diesel corsa for, I'm not a bloody driving instructor. (quote for a corsa/golf etc is more than that)

Unless you are hugely rich and the £2-3000 pounds it's going to cost to insure something interesting is pocket change, then is it really worth it? I say just wait another year or two, save the several thousand pounds that you'll waste on insurance and spend it on something you really want when it's not so ridiculously expensive. Loads of blokes that are into cars at your age go through the same thing, they all want to get into something faster as soon as they can. Just try and be patient, you have many decades of driving ahead of you and you have all the time in the world to own and drive all the cars you've mentioned.

Personally I'd be having a very long and hard think about effectively giving the Mini back and buying the replacement entirely out of your own money.

As long as your parents have some sort of stake in your motoring they are going to have a say in what you can and can't do. You may be able to grovel and talk them around eventually but I'm stubborn and think standing up to them once and for all would have far more of an effect.

As far as I'm concerned unless you've got super understanding parents it is a very bad idea to get them involved with your motoring life, particularly if you want to buy anything that is slightly more interesting than a Vauxhall Corsa.
