New Car Time - 325i Sport?

Very nice cars, I also am glad I got the Saloon over the coupe... better for giving lifts and family things :p

I've only scanned the thread so far so forgive me if this has already been mentioned but dont forget a HPI check. If you are really worried you can get an AA or RAC inspection etc on it too.

Cheers, still need to check with the garages about its Service history etc. Been stupidly busy at work which is stopping me :p

Insurance looks as though its only £100 more a year. Shall take a look into getting an AA inspection on it as well :)

well looks as though its going to be due its Inspection 2 service in about 20k after talking with the garages. £346 for that which covers parts and labour. Its last Inspection 2 was around 52k and has since had its oil service.

From what i understand as well the services for these go

Oil
Inspection 1
Oil
Inspection 2

Anyone know the mileage between each service and whether its actually only Inspection 1 thats needed?

Cheers,

Think the mileage is variable depending on how the car is driven but approx 15k between each. I'm also guessing it goes 15k (oil) 30k (insp1) 45k(oil) 60k(insp2), etc,

Mileage is variable, based on fuel consumption, so it could be anything really :p

12-15k is a good estimate.

My e38 has one green light left after its last (Inspection 2) service, I've covered about 8000 miles since its service, nearly all short trips.

My engine frequently goes over 4000rpm, which is one of the yardsticks the service indicator uses to determine serviceing. :)

The light system isn't used on this E46 - they changed to a mile countdown that shows when you start the car. IIRC this countdown is based purely on the amount of fuel consumed. In reality this is quite a reasonable estimate - as it caters for high-rev frequency, as this will in general consume more fuel :)

hmm, anybody know whether its easy to change the trim inserts in these cars? Seen a nice blue 325i X reg thats only got 17k on the clock, full FSH, stamped log books but its got the wooden inserts which i'm not keen on.

Well after speaking to BMW i think this ones service history is a little patchy. According to them the last service was an Oil one at 60k, and its now done over 100k. Having no history or reciepts would probably make it much harder to sell on in the future.

Have just seen the following though which i may go and see as it comes with a full 2 years warranty and will p/x may current car.

1999 V Reg BMW 3 SERIES 328i CI SE 2 Doors, Manual, Coupe,

Advertised at £6,999 and its done ~98k with full history. The bonus being that I could get rid of my car at the same time, obviously dependent on the price and its got 2 years warranty.

Nice looking colour as well thats a little different to the typical black/silver/blue models you see about which is good.

After reading all that bumph about that engine, its like its some form of technical masterpiece. Engines have been running like that for years. ;)
My favourite phrase is
* The camshaft chain drive and the V-belt drive are maintenance-free and designed for the life of the engine.
Yeah that'd be because once it breaks the life of the engine has finished:p.

Apart from that and a stupidly long service interval on the air filter it's buisness as usual. I'd be interested to know how they manage the long air filter interval, larger filter area maybe?

Looks good though, apart from the wheels.

I got my air filter out last week, it's date stamped October 2002 so safe to assume it's the original filter as the car was registered Nov 02.

Clean as a whistle.

2 year warrenty sounds good! Not a bad price including that, is it a BMW warrenty?

When i emailed the garage they replied with a list of virtually everything on of stuff that was covered by the warranty. I'm guessing that it basically means that if anything on the list of whats covered, breaks in those 2 years then they'll replace for free?

Colour wise, i'm quite liking it :) Something a little different to the normal range as i said.

Take it for a drive, check it dont clunk from the rear when shifting gears else driveshaft bush has prpbably gone or its rear subframe damage which is deadly on these cars and BMW never did a recall in the UK for this design fault :/

drive over bumps to check bushes dont need replacing - you'll hear knocking sounds...

oh and its due for an Inspection 2 at 100K if its not already been done...costs a few hundred..

check all electronics work and double check the engine management light displays on ignition then turns off on fire (otherwise hes hiding a problem and has taken the bulb from the dashboard out!)

oh and tahts not a sport its an SE which means its not 'M' accessorised...

I hate the light system, mine keeps telling me to get an oil change everytime I get in the car, dam you red light al do it when im ready :p#

just read about over 4000rpm and it uses that as a part of how quick to change. that will be why mine wants changed in less than a year and 6000 miles. I just cant drive slowly lol
