New car time - please help :)

I've got an Audi like the one the OP linked to. The one in the link is a 140 TDI so no particulate filter to worry about. It is an 06 though which might mean it has the weaker of the TDI engines (oil pump failure is common) My mother has the 140 and its been perfectly fine (its even an auto which the internet would have you believe is like playing transmission Russian Roulette :) )

I've got the 170 which does have injector issues, filter issues and all manner of other issues. I've taken most of the things that go wrong off my car which in fairness has just added to the cost of the car - Audi replaced the injectors under a recall. I like it (I really do) but given a choice I'd have the petrol turbo model. I think all VAG cars from 2005 to 2008 diesels (save the 1.9s) will have similar issues. I think the Exeo's have the later engines but don't quote me.

The Exeo interior (IMO) looks better than the A4. Exterior wise it doesn't look quite as sporty as an S Line but then SLine is just a few trinkets to add £££££ to the price.

The value agreed on my car which is 3 years older and almost double the miles was the same as that Exeo. That was a special deal through work and it was on a dealer forecourt for £10995 (we did work for the guy, he paid us with two cars :) )

If it was Seat Exeo 2.0TFSI S Line would that persuade you? It's exactly the same interior found in an Audi that you linked earlier!!!

the few I looked at looked like '00 audi interior; very boxy and not very supportive/sporty looking seats

Ill have a look at a few more

I can tell you from experience (and now on the t'internet with all the other horror stories) that the vag cvt box is like playing russion roulette with 5 bullets and 1 empty chamber. It's also extremely expensive to fix.

That is pretty much what I meant :)

Are both the 6 and 7 speeds unreliable then? I read the 7 was supposed to be more reliable but don't know. 7 speed would be on the B7 and 6 on the B6 - I think.

Reliability aside it is quite a nice lazy drive. Perfect for my mother who just wants effortless driving and clutch use makes her leg ache, bless her. If it breaks it will just be fixed and carry on.

As a side note, my office looks out over the town square and I've just watched a particularly rotund gentleman shoehorn himself into the drivers seat of an Exeo so they are quite spacious.

I don't think the "7 speed" is much different other than software (though may be completely wrong)?

Don't get me wrong it's a nice box once you're used to the fact it's not like a normal gearbox - just a complete timebomb of a thing.

That's the thing. Hearing stuff like that just puts me completely right off. Probably should up my budget more and go for a newer car with hopefully fewer issues?

What are people's thoughts on the jaguar x type? I'm getting the impression that it's a rather luxurious version of a ford mondeo? :)
