hello

i've recently moved my hardware to a new tower, changed the psu and added a new 7600gt. its an aging AGP system running athlon 64 3200 and 1gb ram.

befor my 6800gt died it ran with no faults, Now depending on what game i load it either crashes on the option screens or some time into playing the game.

HL2 ep1 crashes on the title screen, GTA sanandreas plays for a while then crashes.

when it crashes the screen goes black the sound keeps repeating and the monitor reads "no input signal"

the pc works normally with every thing else and only crashes when i try to play a game.

i've tried using different drivers, and use driver cleaner befor installing new drivers but it makes no difference.

i thought it could be the new psu, but its a higher wattage than my old one.

what could be the reason for the crashes and is there any thing i can try to resolve them.

thanks.

i thought it might be over heating, checking the temp with win fox2 (which is total poo may i add) im getting 47 idle.

i tried putting the vantec fan card under the graphics card but it didnt make that much difference and the crashing still occured. ambient temp is 27.
is that about normal?

Think I experienced something similair to the problem you have with a 9800 pro many years ago... The problem I experienced was that the card was fine in 2d so windows would load up fine and it would even play some games in 3d.... However when I loaded a game that stressed the card (especially one that used pixel shaders) it would crash.... Farcry was an example as it would sometimes crash at the menu or sometimes within seconds of starting the game. If I were you I would download an old 3d mark (2001) and run the various tests see if one in particular makes it crash. The solution to my problem was to get the card exchanged and then everything was ok.

Wattage means nothing if it's a cheap, generic brand.

The stated wattage can be misleading, you need to check the amps output for the 12v rail against the card manufacturers recommended level.

think i may have found the problem, seems these component's work a whole lot better when you give them some power...

the worst thing of all is i have a window on the new case. (hangs head in shame) still, we've all done it, least i hope im not the only one.

i was surprised it played any game at all, only getting power from the AGP slot.

thanks for the help and tips tho guys, its all good for future reference.
