hi guys.

im using my old pc (same as in sig) as a htpc/casual gaming machine but the fan on my HSF is so noisy i want to replace it with a near silent one.

this is my hsf:

im looking at something like Noctua NF-S12A ULN with 43.7 airflow cfm and 8.6dBA

this pc is not overclocked at present and doesnt really need to be for what im doing with it, i just want it quieter than it is at present! the fan is supposed to lower the dBA and RPM as necessary but never seems to, maybe due to the crappy motherboard.

am i risking overheating using this fan? thoughts?

Are you going to use one of the adapters to fix the fan speed at a low setting? If so then it could lead to high temps. A PWM fan is always the best bet as it should adjust the fan speed according to cpu temp. What motherboard is it? Do you have fan profile options in it's bios? Fan connected to the 4 pin header on the motherboard?

sorry, thought mobo was in the sig. its a crappy Asus p5nd

i cant see anywhere to set the PWM. i know the cpu throttles down a lot when not in heavy use so i guess the fan should slow down but it doesnt seem to. its connected the to mobo IIRC i might need to check. i will have a look for fan settings when im back at home.

the fan i was looking at was reasonable air flow but very low noise.

maybe just a fan controller might be better? i think i might have a fan speed cable somewhere.

You are welcome. I just hope it works out ok. If you set it to manual (if it's anything like the settings on Gigabyte boards) you should be able to set the fan speed by percentage for certain temps so that when it's cool you can have it running silently, then start to ramp up as the cpu heats up and only allowing it to run at full speed when the cpu starts getting too warm. That's if the manual setting works that way on your board.

went to have a look to figure out which fan was the noisy one, using the ultra safe method of sticking my finger in the fan to stop it ;). turns out it was the bloody one in the power supply! cpu and gpu barely audible!! how annoying! all this time, i think i will look at getting a silent fan for the psu.

i guess changing psu fan could be a bit trickier due to the capacitors etc.

its a oczgxs600

seems to be a 120mm fan. i guess i just need to match the CFM needs of the old one? think i will get the most silent one i can that will match the CFM.

now i just need to find the CFM of this fan....

Check out my little guide on swapping the fan on a PSU. Maybe it'll help.

Like with anything mains voltage related there is some danger in the power supply but really unless you are stupid and go touching or licking things you don't need to worry too much. I've fitted fans into 3 PSUs now and 1 of them were before I really understood what I was doing.

The danger is located all around the mains input side, around the switch and large capacitors. Also be aware that sometimes heatsinks can have the charge from capacitors so avoid licking them too.

With luck your PSU is one of the types that has a connector for the fan and would be a simple swap job.

I think there are a few GameXtsream versions out there from different OEM so to find the original fan you may need to pop the lid.

Couldn't find anything out about the 600w version fan but the 700w and 850w versions both use the same fan, Protechnic MGA12012HB 120x25MM dual ball bearing cooling fan 2500rpm@12v 38.3db so it's safe to assume the 600w uses the same one. Can't find any CFM details though. FSP was the OEM for most of OCZ's psu's including the GameXstream, StealthXstream and ModXstream.

yeah, will have a look and order something silent in its place. i guess i just need to match the airflow/CFM? i dont mind snipping wires anyway to be honest. i have some choccy blocks knocking around. or just use eleccy tape

yeah, i will try not to lick anything ;)
