New House, No wires!

Im moving into a new house at the weekend but the problem is that there is only 1 phone point which is right next to the front door in the hall. Its a rented house so I cannot drill all sorts of holes for wires so I think I need some sort of wireless solution.

My PC will only be roughly 10 feet away so I don't need massive range.

I am completely lost when looking at wireless routers/modems so have no idea what will be suitable.

I use the net for online gaming (BF2) so would there be a performance hit for going wireless? higher pings? less bandwidth?

Can anyone recommend a decent bit of hardware that will fulfill my needs?

I too have been using the netgear dg834pn and it's working extremely well, I use it for gaming and I average 30ms ping with no spikes what so ever (that's playing from northern ireland on BT Total Broadband),however i'm feeling inclined to go buy the usb dongle to see how much better it could get!

Strange, i have this router, and i get awful throughput, using a 108mbps rangemax pci card with signal at 100% i got a max of 11-12 mbps transfer speed. And using a normal g adapter i get about 8-9. Extremely disappointed.

Put a splitter on and run your RJ11 from the point to a convenient location, if you have a no drilling clause then i'd suggest trying to squeeze this under the carpet. Once you get to an electrical point you can stop and plug in a wireless router but you may be able to run all the way to the PC area like this. As to effect on games back in the first gen kit I percieved that it was fractionally more delayed but that was possibly down to me thinking wifi would increase lag and may not infact be true. It certainly didn't impact my ability to play online.

Ganesh - Have you checked you have latest firmware/selected the correct speed on the router ? My Netgear allows me to specify specific speeds eg 11 or 54 etc It'll also handle both at the same time (handy with my pda as it only does 11). Also are you getting 10MB/s or 10mbit/s ? Just 100mbit only gives a real speed of 12.6+/-MB/s theoreticaly ?

Yep i'm using the latest firmware and drivers for the card. I tried it on the 108mbps setting, and on the 54, same result. And i tried different channels, and unplugging the cordless phone. No difference what so ever. And i get 10mbits, which is why i am so annoyed.

I even called up tech support, got through to your generic indian call centre and spoke to a very polite but useless woman, i explained my problem with throughput, and she got the idea that i had a problem with the internet and refused to help me with anything else, even though i told her i was using a netgear pci card. I'm sending it back and getting a speedtouch 585 i think.
