Just had a new laptop delievred.

Sony VAIO Laptop FS415B P-M 1.73GHz 512MB 80GB 15.4" X-black DVD±RW
VGNFS415B.CEK

Intel® Centrino® Mobile Technology with Intel® Pentium® M processor 740 (1.73 Ghz and 533 MHz FSB) and Intel® Pro/Wireless 802.11bg
80GB (Ultra ATA / 100 4200rpm) hard disk drive
512 MB (1*512 MB) DDR2 SDRAM, maximum 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) Widescreen X-black LCD screenIntel® 915GM Chipset Integrated Graphics with 128 MB max. Dynamic Video Memory Technology shared with Main Memory
Double layer DVD±RW drive

I ran 3D Mark 03 and was suprised when I got a score of only 881...!!!

Now don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting much, but I was expecting a fair bit more than that. I was watching 3DMark03 run through and I have tested old 9600 gfx cards which handled it better.

I suppose the long and short of it is, does this score look about right? I have an extra 512Mb of mem arriving on friday and I was hoping to be able to play Couterstrike source on this system at home - but now I don't know if it will handle it!!!

The Intel Onboard graphics cards are useless im afraid mate and it does therefore seem right. As CSS requres a 16mb card though it should play ok at low res.

I wasn't really expecting to play it in much more than low res, but even at 640x480 with all detail on low I only get about 5fps... it just seems too low.

The strange thing is that the performance doesn't even seem to vary between 1028x768 and 640x480 - I haven't had chance to run both with fraps installed but it really doesn't seem to be that different with the naked eye.

Surely there must be something I am missing.

 blasphamy! the 9600 cards were awesome! :p

I know, they were good in their day - I just meant that even cards which are a good few years old far outperform the inbuilt gfx in this lappy.

Read this page: http://www.firingsquad.com/features/epic_games_rein_interview/page2.asp you've fallen for buying a crappy laptop, just as the guy from Epic feared.

If people take those machines home and try to play recent PC games on them they’re going to have a horrible experience and possibly give up on PC gaming altogether. Users aren’t educated in this area but when their new $1,500 PC says “no” to a decent PC game they’re going to just assume the PC games market had passed them by. This is sad because the difference in cost the PC manufacturer to put in a decent graphics chip isn’t very much.

What sort of score should I get guys:

1.83GHz Core Duo
1GB RAM
nVidia 128MB GeForce Go 7400

Thanks

P.S. What settings should I be running 3DMark on?

Css with intel onboard= extremely bad id imagine as my 420go is supper crapo.

I have been thinking about formatting the HDD and putting a clean install of XP Pro and new drivers etc on it. Laptops these days always seem to come with loads of pre-installed crap on them and XP home.

Hopefully this will increase it's performance a little?

Nice piece of kit you got there. Decent enough for a laptop. Atleast it plays your games good enough for you.

^^^^^^^^^^ thats about right for a 7800gtx go! U should easily be able to play games on High at High Resolutions! Obviously its not gonna be as fast as the desktop equivalent but for a lappy very good
